Mega Bloks® Barbie® Build 'N Style Pet Shop {Review & Giveaway}

When my kids are watching TV, they are usually watching movies on DVD, or shows without commercials. Lately, though, the TV has been on certain channels for kids that show toy commercials, and my kids are paying attention. The one commercial that continues to catch Rylie's eye is the commercial for the new Mega Bloks® Barbie® toys. Every time she sees that commercial she always says "oooh Mommy, can we get that?" She got a dollhouse and a bunch of Barbie® dolls for Christmas, and ever since then, she has been obsessed with everything Barbie®.

When I was asked if Rylie and I wanted to review the Mega Bloks® Barbie® Build 'n Style Pet Shop, of course I said yes. I knew Rylie would be thrilled! When the box showed up on our front porch a couple weeks ago, she couldn't wait to play with her new toy!

When I first opened the box, all I saw were pieces, pieces and more pieces...all very small, of course. They were packaged neatly in separate groupings, so my first task was to get everything out of the easy open plastic bags. I took one look at the amount of pieces included in this set, and I knew I was in for a project. The Build 'n Style Pet Shop comes with 98 pieces, and includes an adorable buildable pet shop, four super cute pets with themed accessories and Pretty Pets Barbie® mini-fashion figure with an extra fashion.

Please excuse my multi-colored table...it has become Rylie's "project table" and we grew weary of constantly trying to clean all of the marker off of it.

Rylie got down to building right away, and started putting the Mega Bloks® Barbie® together. The figure came with two different skirts - one pink and one black - and Rylie chose the black skirt for her. Everything snapped together with ease, and seconds later, Mega Bloks® Barbie® was ready to work in her pet shop.

The box shows a recommended age of 4+, but I think most younger kids will need an adult to put the Pet Shop together for them. Even at 5 years old, I don't know that Rylie would have had the dexterity to put all of these tiny pieces in the correct places (according to the instruction booklet for set up), and I'm positive she wouldn't have had the patience for it. We both decided it would be best if mommy put it together while she took Mega Bloks® Barbie® and her pets out into her big dollhouse to play. I, personally, love building sets like this, so I had no issue with it.

The instruction booklet was crystal clear, and made the set up process so easy! It went step-by-step and showed which pieces went where with color codes on the Mega Bloks in the pictures.

There were two sheets of stickers to put on certain pieces, and when a sticker was needed, the instruction book showed you exactly which sticker to use on which pieces.

I appreciated that the instructions were all clear pictures rather than words or small letters with arrows. It was very simple for me to put the Pet Shop together exactly as shown in the instructions, and I think most kids over 6 would be able to follow the instructions pretty well. Rylie would have been able to do it with some assistance, but it did take a while, so she was just happy to have it all set up and ready for her to play with.

The front of the Pet Shop has clear doors that really open, plants and flowers. It is so cute!

Inside the Pet Shop is Mega Bloks Barbie's desk, complete with a laptop, a dog bed and bowl, a fish aquarium that turns, and some styling equipment for grooming the pets.

As soon as I told Rylie that the Pet Shop was all set up, she got right down to playing. I love watching her play with toys like this because it forces her to use her imagination. She comes up with some great scenarios! The pets were eating and napping while Mega Bloks® Barbie® worked on her computer.

The great thing about this set (and all Mega Bloks sets) is that they don't HAVE to be set up according to the instructions. Kids can use their imaginations and build them any way they like. While Rylie didn't change the general layout of the Pet Shop, she moved certain pieces around, depending on what the pets were doing at the time.

At one point during the construction of the Pet Shop, Rylie saw me taking pictures and asked why I had to take pictures of some of their new toys. I told her that people send stuff to us so we can try it out and I can tell them how we liked it. Later when she was playing with the Mega Bloks® Barbie® Build 'n Style Pet Shop, she said "Mommy, tell them I really like it!"
