Five Question Friday - August 31st

Happy Friday everyone! Are you all gearing up for the holiday weekend? It will be business as usual around here this weekend - dance, swimming, blogging, laundry, etc - but I get an extra day off of work, so I'll take it! I actually have a lot to do to get ready for Bryce's birthday party next weekend. I can't believe he is going to be 3 already!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Five Question Friday

1. What do you enjoy doing the most with your spouse?

Five years ago, my answer would have been traveling. Now, though, getting some alone time away from the house is our favorite thing to do.

Sign Up For Notify NYC To Get Emergency Notifications {Giveaway}

Notify NYC

Since I have lived in Florida for my entire life, I have been through my fair share of natural disasters in the form of hurricanes. Only months after we built our house back in 2004, we were hit with three major hurricanes in a row, and we were not prepared when the first one whipped through here and caused some serious destruction. When most of the city lost power for many days following Hurricane Charley, we had a hard time finding a decent meal. We learned our lesson, and we were definitely more prepared when the next two came through.

Our lack of food for a few days does not even compare to what the residents of Louisiana lost during Hurricane Katrina, or what New York City residents went through after the devastating events of 9/11. With Hurricane Isaac currently pounding the Gulf Coast, the anniversaries of Hurricanes Irene and Katrina on the minds of many, and September 11th just right around the corner, we are reminded that emergencies can happen anytime.

La Nouba By Cirque Du Soleil At Walt Disney World Resort {Review}

La Nouba Cirque Du Soleil

Since photography was not permitted during the show, all photos shown in this review were provided by Cirque Du Soleil.

Cirque Du Soleil. Up until a month ago, I had only heard the term, but didn't really know what it meant. Since I live near Disney, I knew it was a show, but I had no idea exactly what kind of show it was. After seeing La Nouba at the Walt Disney World Resort, it is still hard for me to describe this show in words, but one word does come to mind - Electrifying!

Cirque Du Soleil means "Circus of the Sun". This isn't your ordinary circus, though. Sure, there are clowns, but there is so much more to it. There are 8 different characteristics that define what Cirque Du Soleil is all about - Acrobatic Performance, Acting, Art Forms From Around The World, Imaginary Worlds, Dance, Daring, Dexterity and Grace. When you combine those 8 characteristics, you have a show that will keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting more!

HABA's New Website Brings German Toys To The USA {Review & Giveaway}

HABA

When my kids get new toys, they want to rip the boxes open and get to playing. Now that we are in the electronic age, though, it isn't always that simple. Instead, we have to read instructions, put a gazillion different tiny parts together, and install batteries. By the time the parents are done figuring everything out, kids have lost their interest and moved on to something else. I tend to choose simpler toys for my preschoolers in order to avoid that hassle and let them get down to what they do best - playing!

Long before the computer age, HABA was founded in Germany to bring natural wooden toys to children. Today, HABA is still owned by the same family and is famous around the world for it's high-quality baby and children's toys. HABA's award-winning toys make it easy for children to get right to playing and keep their imaginations alive for hours.

You can find these great HABA toys in well-stocked specialty stores around the globe. If you prefer to shop from home, though, you can now take a trip to this German toy shop with just a click of your mouse at HABA's American website, http://www.HABAusa.com.

I Have A Need For Speed #VZWA

A need for internet speed, that is.

Speed is not something I have associated with my wireless internet service in a long time. Up until just recently, we had the same wireless carrier for many years. We were happy at first, and then we got comfortable. With that comfort came the tolerance for slow data connections and dropped calls. We called that wireless carrier several times and were promised that things would get better. They didn't. We even purchased new phones and that didn't help. After a while, we were fed up.

My husband researched the different wireless carriers for several weeks and finally made the switch. I was excited about my new phone, and for the first couple of weeks, I enjoyed playing around with it so much that I didn't notice how slow the internet connection was. I didn't have the dropped calls issue, so that was good, but my internet service ended up being slower than it was with the previous carrier.

We were out running some errands with my mom one evening when she made a suggestion of a restaurant to eat dinner at. For my family, going to a new restaurant is scary because of Rylie's severe tree nut allergy, so I grabbed my phone to look up the allergy warnings for that particular restaurant. My kids were hungry and getting cranky, but I figured it would only take a few seconds to find the information I needed. I was wrong. In fact, I never did get to the restaurant's website because my internet connection kept timing out. That was the last straw for me.

Rockin The Latest Barbie Fashions {Review}

Barbie

Rylie loves clothes! In fact, when we are out shopping and she is given the opportunity to buy something, she would much rather have clothes than any toy. She is very picky about her clothes, though, so I have given up trying to purchase them on my own. Whether we are shopping in the store, or shopping online, I have to let Rylie pick out her own clothes or I run the risk of them never being worn.

She likes to mix and match her clothes. When I say "match", I use that term lightly because Rylie likes to wear clothes that don't match. During the week, I generally let her pick out her clothes for school, but my rule is that they have to match. On the weekends, though, unless we are going to a birthday party or another event, I let Rylie have complete say over her wardrobe, and she loves it. I think because I enforce the "matching" rule during the week, she purposely chooses outfits that don't match on the weekends. She definitely has a mind of her own.

Rylie only chooses clothes that are comfortable. She likes soft, comfortable clothes that don't have elastic or thick seams that she can feel through the clothes. Her favorite items are cotton skirts with shorts built in, leggings and cute t-shirts. We have had all out wars in the mornings while Rylie chooses her outfit for the day, so I try and make sure her favorite outfits are clean and ready to wear to avoid any potential conflicts.

Rubbermaid LunchBlox Sandwich Kit {Review}

Rubbermaid
As parents and children are gearing up for back-to-school all over the country, many of you are trying to think of what to pack for lunch for your little ones. I am not yet packing lunch for my kids, but due to food allergies, I will have to do so when they start elementary school. I have to imagine that it can be a difficult task to find enough variety so your kids aren't eating the same lunch day after day, but since most schools do not have refrigerators available for students to keep their lunches cold, the choices can be very limited.

Rubbermaid has recently come up with a great idea for keeping those school lunches cold until your kids can eat them. I would like to introduce to you today the LunchBlox food storage containers.

Five Question Friday - August 24th

Happy Friday my friends! I hope everyone has had a wonderful week! Things were a lot less exciting around here this week. Work was dull, which was a nice change from the prior week. I'm still tired, though. I am beyond backed up on reviews here, but I just didn't have the energy to get them done this week. I have some cool stuff coming up, so hopefully I'll be able to get some of it posted in the next few days. For right now, though, I need some sleep.

The kids had a good week. My mom picked them up from school and took them to swimming lessons every day. Bryce did great all last week, but apparently he has decided that he does NOT want to float and cried 3 out of his 4 lessons this week. On two different days he even said to the teacher "I am NOT coming back to your house anymore." I really don't care if he ever floats, so I'm hoping that they'll just move on to real swimming so I can stop having panic attacks every time he jumps into the deep end of the pool. Rylie is doing great and can swim the entire length of the pool now. I'm so proud of her!

School is going well. Bryce has received good notes every single day since he moved into the three year old class, and I hope he keeps it up. Everyone at the school just loves him so much. Rylie's teacher wrote a note on her paper earlier in the week about how well she is helping out her new friends by showing them where the toys are and teaching them the rules. The owner even made a comment to me about how responsible she is lately and how she is so protective of her brother. Too bad she isn't his protector at home. ;-)

Big Annoucements On Facebook: Acceptable Or Hurtful?

The other day I was listening to my favorite radio show, The Morning Mash Up, and they were talking about making big announcements on Facebook. I think the discussion started because one of the hosts found out from a Facebook post that their friend was engaged, and they were hurt that they weren't told in person. (The discussion was already going when I got in the car, but that is what I gathered.)

I make announcements all the time on Facebook. From something as small as the first time Rylie peed on the potty to a bigger announcement like Bryce's birth, you can stay up to date with my life if you're my Facebook friend. It is a great way to spread news quickly without having to send out the same email multiple times.

OcuFresh Preservative-Free Eye Wash {Review & Giveaway}

OcuFresh by Optics Laboratory

Picture this...

You're at the beach with your family having a fun day of splashing in the water and building sandcastles. Your kids are running across the sand when all of the sudden one of them falls face first into it. When he gets up, he is covered in sand...it is in his mouth, his ears, and worst of all, his eyes. All he wants to do is rub them, but you know that will make it worse. So what do you do?

This scenario has never happened to us, but it definitely could. I don't know what I would do. If I had a bottle of water handy, I would probably try to flush my child's eyes out with that. Or run over to one of those beach showers and try to get him to open his eyes while the water ran into them.

I now have a better solution for any time my kids get something in their eyes. That solution is OcuFresh Eye Wash by Optics Laboratory.

We Have Rats!

OK, well, they're not really rats. They are Chinese Dwarf Hamsters or something like that. They are small little creatures with bulging eyes and sharp teeth, so if you ask me, they are rats.

Meet Smartie and Gummy, my kids' newest pets...

Smartie Gummy

Have I told you guys how much I love having my mom live so close by? She takes the kids to swimming lessons, she cooks dinner for us a couple times a week, and really, she spoils us all rotten. She is the best mom and grandma ever, and she scored big points when she let Bryce pick out a couple of hamsters from the pet store this past weekend.

Rylie's First Dance Lesson

Last week was our week for new experiences. Rylie started VPK, both kids started swimming lessons, and Rylie had her first dance lesson last Saturday. It was a great week for everyone, but I think Saturday was the highlight for Rylie. She loves dancing!

I signed Rylie up for dance lessons a few weeks ago. I found a preschool class that teaches tap, ballet and some tumbling, and I thought the variety would be perfect for her. Her best buddy Peyton also signed up, and the girls were so excited when we all arrived at the dance studio early Saturday morning.

Maytag Delivered Dependability To My Home #MaytagMoms

Dependable Maytag Laundry Mom

A week or so ago a few of my friends and I were chatting about appliances during dinner. Most of the conversation revolved around how most appliances just don't last that long. It seems that after a few years they start to have problems and become less dependable. My mom then joined in the conversation and her first statement was "Hey, I have had a Maytag dryer for over 40 years and it still works great!"

Wait. What? An appliance that has lasted for over 40 years? It was unheard of in my circle of friends.

I knew that my mom's dryer was older than me, but I never realized it was made by Maytag. I wish I had known this sooner because it could have saved us a lot of money over the years. I have never owned a Maytag appliance. There is no real reason for that, I guess I just never ended up with that brand. Until now, that is. When I realized that my mom's dryer was a Maytag, I was even more excited about becoming a Maytag Laundry Mom because I have faith that my Bravos XL Washer and Dryer will last for many years to come.

Add A Seat To Your Joovy Caboose With The Caboose Too Rear Seat {Review}

Joovy

Weekends mean family time here in our house. The four of us generally spend as much time together as we possibly can on the weekends, since we don't get to spend a lot of quality time together during our busy weeks. Therefore, when we go out somewhere, we all go. Whether we are off to a birthday party, a theme park, a shopping trip or just a walk on the trail in the evenings, we are always running somewhere.

Finding the right stroller to fit into our busy weekends has been a bit of a challenge for us. Bryce has always been a good rider, as long as he has a snack or something to play with. Rylie, on the other hand, has never been one to sit still in a stroller. When we are out we let her walk as much as possible, but sometimes we need to get somewhere quick and her little legs just don't go as fast as I would like them to. We need a stroller that Rylie can get in and out of easily, while Bryce rides in comfort for most of the trip.

We bought a huge tandem double stroller when I was pregnant with Bryce, and it worked well for us when he was an infant and Rylie was still small. Now that the kids are bigger, though, it isn't ideal. Someone always has to ride in the back, and that someone usually isn't happy about it. The rear rider can't see much, they get hot, and it isn't easy getting in and out of that rear seat. We also have a smaller double umbrella stroller, but there is no storage area, and now that the kids are bigger, the seats just aren't that comfortable for long periods of time.

A Week Of New Experiences

This post is going to be long, so I hope I don't lose you along the way. We have an exciting week ahead of us...

By the time most of you read this, I will be on my way to Atlanta for my first national blogging event! I will be attending the Conversations with Coca-Cola conference for social media moms. While I am so excited and absolutely honored to have been selected for this opportunity, I am nervous as hell. Why? First, because I haven't been on a plane since my honeymoon in 2007, and I hate traveling alone. Second, because I have to take a cab from the airport to the hotel. I have only been in a cab one time, and let's just say it was after a long night of partying, so I don't remember much about it. And third, I'm afraid I will look like a dork. The dress code is "casual chic" and "jeans are encouraged". Well, I have jeans, but "chic" isn't really a word I would use to describe my wardrobe.

Conversations with Coca-Cola

I'm sure once I get there I will have a great time, but right now, I can feel the anxiety coming on. I am looking forward to making new blogging friends, and of course hanging out with one of my absolute favorite brands! I know this is going to be a great experience...once I get there!

Rylie and Bryce also have a big week ahead of them...

An Olympian In The Making & A SwimWays Twitter Party

SwimWays

Have you been watching the 2012 London Olympics? I'm embarrassed to admit this, but sadly, we have not. I just haven't had a chance to sit and watch TV in the last two weeks and I have missed most of this great event. I did catch a bit of it in our break room at work one day last week, and I was lucky enough to see the USA take a gold medal in swimming. She won by a huge distance, too. It was awesome!

After watching a member of the U.S. Olympic Swim Team win a gold medal, I started wondering how young she was when she started swimming. Chances are, she started swimming when she was a young child, and has developed her skills over the years. Then I thought about my Rylie and how much she loves swimming. Perhaps she will be the next Missy Franklin or Allison Schmitt, winning medals left and right in the Olympics.

Thanks to the awesome products from SwimWays, Rylie has conquered her fear of the water and has the confidence she needs to make it to the Olympics one day! At the beginning of the summer, she didn't want to leave the steps of the pool unless someone was holding her. She started off in the Swim Steps program at Step 2, and became more confident and less fearful as she swam around in her Swim Vest and Swim Sweater from SwimWays.

J Is For Jeep Wrangler Sport Jogging Stroller {Review & Giveaway}

Jeep

Running has never been something that I am good at. I ran regularly in Air Force basic training and then again when I lived with my best friend back in my early twenties. I always felt great after a run, but it was hard for me. I would much rather be on an elliptical machine at the gym.

That said, I no longer have time to go to the gym, but I need to find a way to get in shape. I have several friends who run and most of them are in great shape. I need an exercise routine that includes my family since we don't get to spend much time together during the week, so running seems like the way to go. The kids like to ride their bikes and go for walks, but since Bryce is so small, we don't walk at a fast pace at all. Now that I have my J is for Jeep Wrangler Sport Jogger, I can get in some cardio while still spending time with my family!

J is for Jeep Wrangler Sport Jogger

Reunited

Rylie started daycare at two months old. It was a sad day for me, but the start of so many good things in her life. One of those good things is the amount of friends Rylie has made over the last four and a half years. She is still friends with several of the kids who she was in the infant room with at her first daycare, and one of those friends is Angelica.

Angelica's mom and I became friends online while we were pregnant, and then met in person shortly after Angelica was born. We became great friends, and we still are today. Rylie and Angelica spent a year or so together at our first daycare and then ended up at different daycare centers for various reasons. They were reunited again at our current daycare where they were inseparable. They truly were best friends.

Back in January, Angelica relocated to Boston with her family because of a great job opportunity that her dad was given. While I was excited for him and his new job, I was sad for Rylie and Angelica because I knew they would miss each other like crazy. Andrea and Angelica came over and had dinner with us a couple of nights before they left, and I had these picture frames made up for the girls so that they would always remember each other.
