When we purchased cribs for Rylie and Bryce, they both came with mattresses. Since we were spending so much on the furniture, I didn't really pay much attention to the "free" mattress. I figured all crib mattresses were the same and never looked around at any others. I am here today to tell you that all crib mattresses are definitely NOT the same!
A few months ago when I was changing the sheets on Rylie's bed, I noticed that I could feel the coils through the mattress. It is almost five years old, so I figured that the material covering the coils had lost it's cushion. Rylie didn't seem to mind, but then again, kids are able to sleep on a hard floor with no issues. Still, just because she might not understand what comfort really is, she shouldn't have to sleep on a surface that wasn't truly comfortable.
Since I am a Kolcraft Mom, I knew that Kolcraft carried several mattresses and I decided to remedy the uncomfortableness of Rylie's bed. Brian and I looked at the variety of crib and toddler bed mattresses and decided to try out the Sealy Baby Posturepedic Crown Jewel Crib Mattress.
When Rylie's new mattress arrived, I immediately stood it up next to her old mattress. I could already see the differences between the two. The Sealy mattress (on the left in the photo below) looked sturdier and way more plush than the mattress we received with her crib.
Here is a list of the features of the Sealy Baby Posturepedic Crown Jewel Crib Mattress from the Kolcraft website:
- Exclusive POSTURETECH® coil system offers 220 POSTURETECH® coils for long-lasting support
- Everedge® Pylons at each corner of the mattress create ultimate corner support
- STAPH-GARD® reinforced cover effectively inhibits bacterial growth and provides an anti-static surface
- All-around heavy gauge steel border rods maximize side, corner and edge firmness
- Steel bars distribute baby's weight evenly over the entire surface of the mattress
- GREENGUARD® Children & Schools Certified: This entire mattress is GREENGUARD® Children & Schools certified for indoor air quality and low chemical emissions to help create a healthier sleeping environment for your baby.
- Two non-allergenic layers insulate the mattress for lasting durability
- Third non-allergenic layer provides additional support
- Fourth non-allergenic layer offers a plush, gentle sleeping surface for your baby
- Tear-resistant cover with vinyl binding resists stains, odors, and mildew. Mattress wipes clean with a damp cloth
- Mattress also fits toddler bed frames
- Lifetime warranty on workmanship and materials
- Meets or exceeds all flammability, lead, phthalate and CPSIA testing and does not contain toxic fire retardants
- Proudly Made in the USA
When I saw how much bigger the new mattress was compared to the old mattress, I was a little concerned that it wouldn't fit in her bed, but it actually fit perfectly. It is much heavier than her previous mattress, but that just made me realize what an excellent quality mattress this really is.
Brian first tested the mattress out after he laid on the old mattress. He could immediately tell a difference in the comfort level. In fact, he just wanted to curl up and go to sleep.
When he got up from Rylie's bed, we watched the mattress spring right back up into it's original shape. The support system in the mattress is amazing!
Since the mattress is heavy, it wasn't quite as easy to make Rylie's bed as it had been previously. In fact, her old mattress was so light that I was pretty much able to toss it around while I stretched the sheets over the 4 corners. I will gladly trade ease of making the bed for more comfort and support for my little girl any day!
Once her bed was made, Rylie was eager to get in and try it out. When I asked her what she though about her new bed she said "oooh, this is nice." OK, I know that came from a kid who can pretty much sleep anywhere, but I'm sure that not being able to feel the coils in the mattress made her sleeping surface much more comfortable than it was before.
This mattress is fabulous! It is supportive and comfortable, and we absolutely cannot feel the coils through the multiple non-allergenic layers on top of them. The cover will be easy to clean if needed, and it is so thick that I believe it will last for a long time. Rylie won't be in her toddler bed for much longer, but Bryce will use this mattress for at least another two years.
The Sealy Baby Posturepedic Crown Jewel Crib Mattress retails for $159.99 at Kolcraft.com. I believe it is worth every penny, considering the exceptional quality and durability of this mattress. With a lifetime warranty on workmanship and materials, this may be the only mattress you ever have to buy for your little one!
Don't make the mistake I did and just accept the "free" mattress that comes with your crib. Compare the different mattresses out there and make sure your baby or toddler will be sleeping comfortably. I highly recommend this Crown Jewel!

My baby's current mattress is a used one and it's not very supportive. This would be great to win I love that its non-allergenic too!
I love that it is supportive, comfortable, and easy to clean!
It's interesting to hear how heavy the mattress is. Maybe changing the mattress sheets can be exclusively my husband's job while I'm healing postpartum. We have an adult Sealy and we've been happy with the quality, so we're definitely willing to try this one out! Thanks for the heads up about default mattresses not being the best (first-time mom here!).
I really enjoyed the review, the picture of your husband cracked me up! I love the greenguard on this mattress! It would make me feel much better about what my baby is sleeping on!
Mattresses have improved dramatically over the years. It is just as important to have a good mattress for little ones when you go visit Grandparents as it is to have one at home. I know I'll have a Sealy waiting for them!
I like that it has a Staph-Gard cover. And that it also fits toddler beds.
i like that the vinyl binding resists stains, odors, and mildew
I hate sleeping on a terrible mattress so I could hardly expect my child to do the same. I bought a nice mattress for my first baby but she's still using her crib so I need a second mattress for my infant (he's in a basinette right now). Love that this one has the Staph guard and the Green Guard. The stiff corners are important to me also as apparently I have very acrobatic children. :)
one does need a good mattress and I like that this also fits toddler bed frames

I commented on the Talk Like A Pirate Day Activites and Crafts for Kids as Alex Liz Robinson
love it's easy to clean. great for our first baby!

Our mattress has already gone through two kids and its looking horrible from where they jumped as they got older on it
I like the fact that you actually got my attention on the matter! I don't even know what mattresses my kids have..I should really look into it.. thanks!
I like that it is comfortable. We have one of those light mattresses that you can just toss around too and I'm sure this one in the blog would be better for my son.
Left a comment on Baby Matters at Kolcraft site about Talk Like a Pirate Day. We missed it but will do it up big next year with the 4 almost 2 year olds!

Wish our kids, the non allergenic layers would be my "buying" point. We have almost all the kids in our family with allergies and half with asthma. Our grand daughter that lives with us and shares a room with mommy does not have a great mattress. It is lightweight and not very sturdy,..actually a walmart buy because the baby was coming and that was what was affordable. This would be great for another year in the crib and then transfer to the toddler bed. Was glad to hear in your review that is easy to clean too!
thanks!

I think it would be great to have something that will work for baby and toddler. Non-allergenic helps though, you never know what kind of allergies the little one might develop
I love that the entire mattress is certified for indoor air quality and low chemical emissions to help create a healthier sleeping environment for my baby.
This is an amazing giveaway and this is something that I've really been researching since finding out I'm pregnant. I'm hoping I win, but grateful for the knowledge I've learned!

I love the lifetime warranty on the materials. I bought a cheapy bed for my daughter as her first crib, she hated it and it broke apart within just one month. You definitely get what you pay for.
I like a mattress that is easy to clean and tear proof, especially for toddlers that are potty training. The lifetime warranty is super for new parents and ones that are planning on having more kids. Gives us parents peace of mind knowing that the mattress is firm but has a bit of give and still keeps it's shape.. I am sure we would have a lot years of use with this mattress.

I like that the mattress is firm which my doctor has stressed is important for our baby on the way!
I love how supportive and comfortable this mattress is! I also love the lifetime warranty!!! It'd definitely come in handy right now! I hope I win :)
i like the staph guard feature.
It is nice to see a quality mattress for baby, so many I have looked at while shopping for one for my girl are just flimsy or poorly made. Baby deserves quality sleep too!
I love the lifetime warranty, that it is firm, the staph guard is huge, I love they have tips on how to reduce the chances of SIDS, and I love the photos of your husband. HYSTERICAL.
I love that this has two non-allergenic layers!!
We are expecting in November. Our mattress is a friends hand me down of another friend. I guess I never thought about it until now!
I can't believe how much bigger this mattress is than your old one. Should all crib mattresses be pretty much the same size?
Just the name sealy lets me know it's a great mattress!
Thanks for the opportunity!

I especially love the picture of your husband in the bed! I also like how much thicker and comfortable it looks.
I Have this mattress for my toddler daughter already and i love the firmness and how she gets a good nights rest..i would love to switch out my sons mattress in his nursery

I am currently shopping around for god crib mattresses for my first child. I love the comparison picture you took of your old mattress vs the Sealy. I like how its is stain resitant
I love that it has 4 non-allergenic layers. I am having my first baby and don't that much about this so this review has given me some great insight on a great crib mattress!
When my kids were babies, I never thought about their spine or the effect of their mattress. Now that my daughter is in Chiropractic School, I realize how important a good baby mattress is. My first grandson is due in a couple of weeks and I would love for him to sleep on this mattress! (Marla B)
Babys/ kids don't know the difference bc they either can't talk or havnt been given the choice. Would be Di exciting to receive an awesome mattress for my future baby! We always want the best, but can not afford. So I know what you mean when you say free once you've already spent for the rest! ;)
I liked your mattress review. We got a good mattress for our son when he was a toddler (entering the contest for my brother whose baby was born just 2 weeks ago) but didn't really test out a bunch of different ones. My question relates to the 5-year old mattress thing... wowzerz! Our was recycled after just 2 years when we transitioned jr. into a twin size bed and it was already pretty beat up. I couldn't really imagine getting more than 3 years of usefullness from a toddler/crib mattress.

I like that you cannot feel the coils. My daughter mattress was at first great but now I can feel the springs.
I love the lifetime warranty so it must be a well made durable mattress.its so great when you can pass things down from one child to the next and even the next generation :)
You always leave a great review on products that you have tried. Sealy is a great company and has many great products for kids of all ages. I like that it is non-allergenic layers insulate the mattress for lasting durability.
I love that it is non allergenic. Kids have so many allergy problems at least this is one less place to worry about

the picture of your husband trying out the bed made me laugh - this is precisely why my husband does not want me blogging.

I like that it has low chemical emissions, it's nice to know that mattress companies are starting to address that.
I like that it is non allergenic and durable. I have always liked Sealy mattresses.

It looks very comfortable.
I think that most (not all) matresses that come with new cribs are horrible. I like to know that my child is sleeping on a mattress that I myself would sleep on. Especially with the amount of time a new baby (and older babies) sleep!
Thanks for the review!

I like how it is heavier and the coils are good and you don't feel them. I liked your pictures!

My baby's current mattress was pretty cheap but it was all we could afford. The mattress doesn't fit as snugly in the bed as it should and it doesn't look very comfy. The Sealy mattress looks like it would fit his bed so much better and be more comfortable!
