Meet Smartie and Gummy, my kids' newest pets...
Have I told you guys how much I love having my mom live so close by? She takes the kids to swimming lessons, she cooks dinner for us a couple times a week, and really, she spoils us all rotten. She is the best mom and grandma ever, and she scored big points when she let Bryce pick out a couple of hamsters from the pet store this past weekend.
She came over for lunch on Sunday and then was trying to convince Bryce to go run some errands with her. I heard her talking to him about going to the pet store and then I heard him say "I can get my hamster?" WHAT!?!? I looked at Bryce and said "oh no, we can't have hamsters here."
Lo and behold, Bryce and Mama came back from their shopping trip and he had the biggest smile on his face. "Look at what I got!" Sure enough, there were two little rodents jumping around in a cardboard box. Greeeaaat.
The hamsters were transferred to their cage and the kids had fun watching them run in the wheel and bury themselves in the fluffy bedding. They took turns petting the little critters while they crawled around on Brian's hand. I still haven't touched them.
We decided to name the hamsters after the kids' favorite candies. Bryce claimed the dark hamster as his, so her name is Smartie. Rylie named the lighter hamster Gummy. Hopefully my mom's dogs don't actually think they are candy!
Yes, I said my mom's dogs. Because that is where the hamsters will be residing. I have enough trouble feeding the mouths in our house as it is...I don't need any more living creatures to take care of! The kids are with my mom every afternoon and here and there on the weekends, so they can play with their little rats whenever they want to.
When my brother and I were kids, we had all kids of pets - hamsters, gerbils, Guinea pigs, rabbits, and even a big ole frog who ate mice. I never really understood why my dad didn't want us bringing anything else home, but now I get it. Good thing my kids have their Mama!
Just so you know...I really don't hate the
What about you? Do you have little creatures in your house?

Mikey really wants what is referred to as a "robo-hamster" which is a little dwarf hamster with big red eyes that kind of looks cartoonish. It's a no-go however, as we have 2 dogs and 6 cats who would be fighting over the little morsel. Growing up, though I probably had dozens of mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, birds, etc!
So when Mia wants little furry creatures, can they stay at Mama Lois's house? ;-)
LOL, your mom is just like my daughter and I am much like you are right now. In fact, my daughter just got a kitten 2 weeks ago that is driving me crazy. I have her dog, an older cat,her kitten. They are expensive not to mention, I feed them, let them out, etc. SO much work!
LoL! I got such a good laugh out of this article. We don't have any animals we have enough kids to take care of. And we have a lake in our backyard so we have occasional disgusting frogs and turtles in our yard. Yuck!!
Hi Smartie and Gummy! They are too cute!
Even though I grew up on a farm and there were LOTS of animals around I loved with all my heart, I could not imagine getting mice, rats, gerbils, etc...but we DID! We have had them at various times but we are "rodent" free right now. Well, with the exception of my hubby...he's kind of cute and hairy with with beady eyes. LOL.
thanks for a great story!
Hope your little ones enjoy THEIR little ones!
We have a cat and my wife talked about getting some rats or hamsters. These actually don't look bad, but I think I am still against the idea of having a mouse (rat) and a cat under the same roof. It doesn't seem to work out for Tom and Jerry!
Iam completely against my kids having anything like gerbils, hampers and such things.Maybe a fish or bird or something but those yikes.I had gerbils when i was young. I had a bad experience with them. They do look cute in picture though.
I'm sure the kids are loving their new pets...however,I'm not sure I would have been pleased with grandma bringing new pets in our house, she wouldn't be the one cleaning the cages and such! LOL
