Silly Sock Day

Last Thursday was silly sock day in Rylie’s class at school. I love "spirit days" such as that because they give kids a chance to do something special and get away from the same old routine. She was so excited about it all week!

Unfortunately, we have been crazy busy (story of my life), and I kept forgetting to get to the store to get Rylie some silly socks. I know you all are shocked, but sometimes, even “perfect moms” like me screw up once in a while. Then Tuesday night rolled around and Rylie mentioned something about silly sock day being in two more days. Crap!

I remembered that she had these long white socks from that time I lost my mind and signed her up for soccer at two years old, so I told her that she could color them with marker and make her own silly socks. She was thrilled! I decided at the last minute Wednesday night that fabric paint would work better than marker, so while the kids had a bath, I ran to Michael’s to get some. After her bath, Rylie and I got to working on her silly socks.

Rylie making silly socks

Rylie did one sock and I did the other. I had to copy what she was doing so they looked the same. I put the socks on some hair spray cans so we could paint all around the socks to make them super silly. About a half hour later, Rylie had silly socks!

Our finished silly socks

Rylie was so excited to put her silly socks on Thursday morning! She was so proud of our creations that she was even happy to pose for pictures.

I was running late that morning, so Brian took the kids to school. As they were pulling away, I remembered this old skit from one of Eddie Murphy’s comedy shows. All of his friends had burgers from McDonald’s and he had this “big meatball” with green peppers and onions in between two pieces of white bread, because his mom said she could make a better burger than McDonald’s. He was laughed at by all of his friends, of course.

When Brian got back home I was like "Is Rylie going to be the nerd at school with her homemade silly socks?" and he said "Are you kidding? She thinks they’re awesome!" He said that when they got to school, one of Rylie’s friends got there at the same time. Rylie said "Hurry Daddy and get me out so I can show her my silly socks!"

Who needs store bought socks? They can only get THAT silly if you make them yourself!

Aww, look how happy she is with her silly socks. I bet the kids at school were all a little jealous of how original they were.

How clever to put them around hair spray cans to paint them. They turned out so cute! I love the fun days my kids have had at school, but just like you, I procrastinate and am always running out to get things ready last minute. Seems like most of the times that's when things turn out better. Guess we work pretty well Under Pressure. Home made is always best and you created a "time with mommy" memory by making them yourselves! I'm sure Rylie thinks you are a "perfect" mommy always...and really that's all that counts!
