I don't know about you, but I'm not a fan of flossing. By the time that I'm done with my nightly routine; using a 3-step program to wash my face and then brushing my teeth, I'm ready to hit the hay! I do however understand the importance of flossing and attempt to do it at least once or twice a week. I typically substitute mouthwash in place of flossing most nights though.
Since the age of 6 I've been with the same family dentist. I'm good about keeping my appointments and getting my routine check-up and cleaning done every 6 months as recommended. One thing that my hygienist has drilled me on for the past 2 years is my lack of flossing. I always floss really well the week before my appointment (hoping she won't notice), but unfortunately there's no tricking her...darn!
With gingivitis looming over my head I was determined to stop being a slacker at flossing....if I could only find an easier and less painful way of doing it! Enter Sonicare AirFloss by Philips:
- Simple one-button use; as easy as a mouse-click
- Microburst technology cleans at the touch of a button
- Charging after two weeks
- Slim, angled nozzle for easy to even the hard-to-reach areas
- Guidance tip for easy placement
- Easy-to-fill reservoir
- Slim, easy to hold handle
- Fits standard Sonicare chargers
Sonicare describes the following about the Rechargeable AirFloss:
Microburst technology applies a quick
burst of pressurized air and micro-water droplets to clean deep between teeth
where a toothbrush can't reach.
Removes up to 99% more plaque between teeth than
brushing with a manual toothbrush alone; Proven to improve oral health
effectively.
* Compared to manual toothbrushing alone
I have been using the Sonicare AirFloss faithfully for just over a week and I'm really impressed! First of all, it's a great quality product and honestly I'd expect nothing less from the Sonicare line. I own and have used the Sonicare Rechargeable Toothbrush for several years and had a feeling the AirFloss would measure up.
I love how simple it is to use; just open the easy-to-fill water reservoir with either water or mouthwash. I elected to use both at once because I typically water down my mouthwash just a bit since the alcohol is a bit overbearing and makes my eyes water.
After filling the reservoir simply turn on the AirFloss and press the activation button and you're in business! I find the guidance tip to be very helpful at guiding the AirFloss along the gum line. It takes less than 60 seconds to complete, amazing!
If you're anything like me, you are wondering if the product really does what it claims to do. I mean, how can I do a true review without checking with my resources, right? Facts are important! So I booked my 6 month check-up at my dentist office for a week following the use of the AirFloss. I told my hygienist upfront that I had been using the Sonicare AirFloss and wanted her expertise on whether she could see a difference. I am happy to report that she indeed noticed a difference in the amount of plaque between my gums and teeth. I was so happy to get her approval of the Sonicare AirFloss!
This innovative way of flossing and removing plaque from between your teeth is effective and less time consuming than the old way of doing things. I plan to incorporate this into my nightly routine from now on! There were only two cons to the Sonicare AirFloss that I noticed. The first was that the door to the reservoir seemed a bit cheap compared to the rest of the handle. For now it works great, but I just wonder if over time and use that it will not stay in place like it's meant to.
My only other concern (and in fact my hygienist brought this up as well) is that my gums were a bit sore from the Sonicare AirFloss. The amount of pressure that's released from the Microburst Technology takes a bit of getting used to. My hygienist suggested backing it away from my teeth just a tiny bit when using to see if that helps with this issue. I have done that since and do feel a difference. Oh and I highly suggest stepping back from the mirror just a bit, the Sonicare AirFloss can be a bit messy with the water and pressure combination causing your mirrors to get wet. :)
Overall I am very impressed with the Sonicare AirFloss by Philips and (as mentioned above) this will become part of nightly routine. I find this newer way of maintaining a healthy mouth and gums is much easier than floss and brushing alone and a lot less cumbersome. You can purchase the Sonicare Rechargeable AirFloss in stores at Target and Wal-mart or online at Amazon.com. At the time of this review prices range between $77 and $90. I believe it is a fair value for the product as it can be used for years to come and like with many other products from the Sonicare line, replacement nozzles can be purchased as well.
If you hate flossing, then Sonicare AirFloss is right for you! It's quick, easy and gets the job done, possibly even better than your current routine! In the end this valuable product could save you money at the dentist by using it correctly and often as a way of maintaining a healthy mouth.
Disclosure: All opinions are my own. I received the Sonicare AirFloss for the purpose of this review. No other compensation was received.

this would be great to have, I'm a terrible flosser
This looks so much easier than flossing! Definitely something I would like to try out. Thanks for sharing your review!
Thanks for the great review - my husband and son both have very little spacing between their teeth... which makes it that much tougher (and painful) for them to floss. I wonder if this would help!
@Alissa, I have the same problem! This seems to be working for the tight spaces between my teeth. :)
Thanks for the review! I saw these at Costco and was wondering if they work well. We've been using Sonicare toothbrushes for years and love them (and so does our dentist). At Costco they had a 2-pack for $120...
I hate flossing, what a great invention!!
This is really a great idea!!
We have many of these-both me and my husband are dentists. We love them and sell them to our patients! Great review btw:)
thanx girls for your feedback! :)
I use their toothbrush and you know what would be cool, if they could combine the two. I would have one piece of equipment and would follow on with the other.
I hate to floss but know that it is important. I think the airflosser would make it a lot easier. Thanks for sharing.
I HATE flossing and I'm terrible about doing it but this seems like something I could do. I do wonder though if it would make my gums sore as I tend to have a sensitive mouth.
Wow! This sounds so cool!!! Thanks for the great review!
