Saturday Playdate - Anna & Essie

Welcome to another fun Saturday Playdate! Today we're playing with Laura from Anna & Essie. Laura is a mom of two beautiful little girls...can you guess what their names are? Her blog is a little-of-this-and-a-little-of-that, which is my favorite kind of blog. You can read it and feel like you know her.

When you're done here, please check out Laura's blog. Leave her some comment love and let her know you stopped by from the playdate.

Hi I'm Laura from Anna & Essie, and I'm really excited to be invited over for a play date! I write about a lot of different subjects on my blog, but when I get the chance to do a guest post, I always want to let people know about the subject nearest and dearest to my heart...being a special needs mom. My oldest daughter Anna is just days away (we hope) from getting her final diagnosis of MeCP2 Duplication Syndrome (you can say it like meck-pee-two). This disease was only discovered in 2005, two years after she was born. When it was discovered, it was originally thought that it was impossible for girls to have it. So finding out the problem with her has taken quite some time, and took a lot of maternal instinct. That's the story I'd like to tell you today to encourage all moms to understand that they know their kids better than anyone else, and that if they have a nagging feeling one way or the other, it usually is that maternal instinct and it's good to listen to it. First let me introduce you to my sweet Anna & her darling little sister Essie. This photo was taken about five months ago, so they've both changed and grown since then, but this is a pretty good photo so I'll share it:

I have no idea how you're going to pay attention to the rest of this story with all that cuteness on the page, but I'm sure you'll try. Our story starts of course when Anna was born. She cried a lot and was a very "floppy" baby. The first time my maternal instinct kicked in was feeling like she really NEEDED to be held a lot. It was different when Essie was born. I could really tell when she just wanted to be held and when she needed to. With Anna, it seemed like she always needed it. I got a lot of flack from a lot of people because I wouldn't put my baby down. I let her sleep in her bed at night and such, but during the day she wanted to be held and I let EVERYTHING else go and held her. Other people in my life could only look at the situation and see a first time mom that fell in love and wouldn't put her baby down to do the household chores. But I knew it was more than that, and I held on to that knowledge...and to my baby. Here's a baby photo of her. Note if you can that she was a more scrawny-like baby, not at all like her little sister who was a healthy chub-ster from day one.

It looks like she's winking...how cute is that? So as this story progresses, we noticed that she wasn't meeting her developmental milestones. Every time we'd go to the doctor she'd say, "Is she waving bye-bye, is she she saying ma-ma?" (etc. etc.) And I would say no. Now, here's a part that a lot of moms may identify with. My well meaning friends and family were saying, "You have to work with her on that, you have to teach her." So here I am thinking I'm not doing right by my baby. What if they're right? What if all this holding her has just spoiled her and I'm not doing what I should be doing like teaching her how to say ma-ma and wave bye bye? It was not a good feeling.

I think one of the most difficult moments in my life was when tests were ordered and we went to see a neurologist. In that appointment this neurologist confirmed that there was definitely something wrong. Though a lot of worry clouded my mind, a wave of relief flooded over me. I hadn't done this. This was not neglect, and my instinct to hold her had been right. I say it was difficult because I felt guilty about being relieved; nevertheless, I was very relieved that I hadn't done something to delay my child. If anything, I helped her because I gave her that security of mom's arms that she desperately needed.

I realize this story is getting long, and I apologize. It's a lot to tell and if you're a mom struggling with any of the issues I have, I want you to "get" this. Still, I'll try to jump forward here.  The initial idea was that Anna had some type of mitochondrial disorder. The problem was, the only way to tell which mitochondrial disorder it was, was to do a muscle biopsy. With this procedure, you go to Atlanta for four days and they cut a piece of muscle out of your child's thigh to analyze it. Here's the kicker...even if they could find which mitochondrial disorder it was, there's no treatment available for any type of mitochondrial disorder. Guess what I said? Nope! No way, not gonna happen. I got a lot of pressure and a lot of flack about this from doctors. I also got a little bit from concerned family members, but they mostly tried to understand and support my decision. Not doing the muscle biopsy right away made things difficult because it can be tricky to get services at school and/or any kind of other help without a final diagnosis, but we've managed.

Finally in 2010, when Anna was seven (the age she is now) my instinct said it was time to do the muscle biopsy. When we met with Dr. Schoffner, he assured us that he wasn't only looking for a mitochondrial disorder, but WHATEVER this is. They didn't just take muscle, they took blood and urine too. By the way, I love him. He is just awesome! If you have a kid that needs to see Dr. Schoffner in Atlanta, get your mountain of paperwork in. He r-o-c-k-s!

So, of course Dr. Schoffner found a duplication on the xq28 chromosome (On the MeCP2 gene) and no mitochondrial disorder. But, here's the thing you need to "get".  If we had done that muscle biopsy even two years earlier we wouldn't have found the source of the problem. (I was being pressured to do this biopsy from the time she was two years old.) The blood work, not the muscle showed the duplication, but because the disease was undiscovered until two years after she was born, and then for a while believed to be impossible for girls to have, the blood they took wouldn't have been tested for it if we had done the muscle biopsy any earlier. There are girls that we now know with MeCP2 that were being told as late as 2007 (when Anna was 4) that they couldn't find the problem. I think that would have been more frustrating than waiting around all the time we did. Of course if you suspect MeCP2 you can ask your doctor about a blood test, not a muscle biopsy. It's only relevant in our story because they suspected a mitochondrial disorder and a muscle biopsy is the only way to detect which mitochondrial disorder a child may have.

Anyway, that's my story. Trust your instincts! You're probably wondering how MeCP2 affects Anna. You can read the post that I wrote about MeCP2 Disease Characteristics which describes how it affects boys and girls differently, and specifically how it affects Anna. Thanks for reading my Saturday Play Date Post, and be on the lookout for the new MeCP2 Kids non profit organization coming soon. Here's one last photo of Anna with her "best friends", Minnie and Daisy. Have a great Saturday!

Thanks for stopping by for our playdate! I hope you had fun! If you would like to come over for a playdate, let me know in a comment or an email.

Five Question Friday - April 29th

Happy Friday! And Happy {almost} Birthday to me! Let the festivities begin! Yes, I'm one of those who has a birthday weekend. I used to have a whole birthday week, but when you're as old as I am, you only have the energy to celebrate for two or three days. My birthday is Sunday and I will be 36. That is still "mid-30s", right?

We have a super fun weekend planned. First I'll have my little work party today. My friend Dee and I always bring each other cakes for our birthdays, and of course I'm really looking forward to that. (Good thing I haven't started my Nutrisystem diet just yet!) Tomorrow we're heading to Busch Gardens to hang out with my good friend Carol and her family. This will be Bryce's first visit to a theme park! After our day at the park we're going to go to St. Pete to spend the night with my BFF Melissa. On Sunday we'll head over to my mom's and then meet up with my brother and my other BFF Rebecca for my birthday dinner. I'm sure we're going to be exhausted by the time we get home Sunday night, but it will be sooooo worth it. We need a weekend of fun!

So what is everyone else up to this weekend? I hope it is a great one for you!

Now for some Friday blogging fun! If you would like to play along with 5QF, head over to My Little Life and link up!

1. If you could buy any car, money not an option, what would it be?

Well I love my Nissan Armada, and honestly I don't really care to drive anything else. BUT, if money were no option, I would get the Bugatti Veyron for my husband. I guess I could drive it a couple of times just for fun. Who wouldn't want to zoom around in a car at over 260mph that is worth over 2.6 million dollars?

2. What was your worst first date ever?

I don't even remember the guy's name, that's how bad it was. I used to work at a restaurant that had a night club in it, and every night was a different theme. Thursday nights were 70s night and one of the DJs from the "oldies" station was the host. I got to be pretty good friends with him and his wife. One night one of their friends was there and I mentioned that he was cute, and the next thing I knew, the DJ set up a date for us. The guy was just a dork. He was not interesting at all, and he came on way too strong. We went to the Melting Pot for dinner, and you know how time consuming a dinner there is. UGH. It felt like it went on forever. When we got back to my apartment I told him that I had to go meet up with my brother or something just to get him to leave. Needless to say, I never talked to him again.

3. How old were you when you fell in love for the first time?

Well, I thought I was in love when I was 16 and dating my first boyfriend, but what did I know? I think I fell in "real" love for the first time when I was like 23. How do I know it was real love? Because when it didn't work out between us, I was absolutely devastated. I had never felt that way before.

4. When was the last time you reconciled your checkbook?

It has been years. Funny thing...even though I am an accountant, my husband takes care of all of the finances in the house. He keeps track of all the money. I just spend it!

5. If you were going to fashion a "Wanted" Ad for a best friend, how would you word it?

Wanted: A best friend. She must be honest and loyal, and willing to drop everything at a moment's notice to help me when I really need her. Would prefer someone who loves to shop, get pedicures and drink coffee. She must love kids, or at least my kids. Serious inquiries only. I don't play games and I won't deal with drama.

Don't forget to stop back by after 10PM EST tonight for my Weekend Win It giveaway linky, where you will find some great giveaways to enter, and you can also promote yours! Come on over on Saturday for Saturday Playdate and meet a fabulous guest blogger. Then come back on Sunday for Relax & Surf Sunday, where you can link up your blog and hop around on your own terms, with no rules!

Ear Infections: Not Just For Kids

Tuesday morning I took the kids to the ENT. Our previous visit to his office hadn't gone very well. Rylie failed her hearing test because she had fluid in her ears, so what was supposed to be her last visit to him wasn't. And since Bryce got another ear infection just two weeks after his had his tubes re-done and had his adenoids removed, we were concerned about him too. However, this visit was wonderful! Both kids' ears looked great! Rylie has to go back in 4 months for another hearing test, and as long as she passes that one, she is done at that office. Bryce will still go back every 4 months until his tubes come out, and hopefully we will get good news each time. I'm so glad that we don't have to worry about their ears, for right now, at least.

Tuesday afternoon I took myself to the doctor. My throat has been sore for a couple of weeks now so I decided to get it checked out. My ears were both hurting too, which I thought was from my throat. Well my doctor said my throat looked fine (which I still don't understand since it is still sore) but that my one ear was full of wax so it had to be flushed out so she could look at it. As soon as she said that, I felt nauseated.

A few minutes later the nurse came in with a bottle of water with a little tube attached to it. She stuck it in my ear and started squeezing water into it. OH.MY.GOD. It hurt like hell! I was literally in tears. She finally got this huge clump of wax out (I know, GROSS!) and then stopped. It is a good thing that I'm not a violent person, because I seriously wanted to punch her. I have never experienced pain like that in my life. I still had tears in my eyes when my doctor came back in. She just gave me this look and I said "that hurt like hell!" As she was getting her little ear-looker instrument to jam in my ear she said "you're such a baby." I proceeded to tell her again just how bad it hurt and she took a look in my ear and said "well that's because you have an ear infection." What? Am I 2? Since when do adults get ear infections? Well apparently we do. I was sent on my way with a prescription for an antibiotic and directions to take Claritin-D and Ibuprofen along with it. I also had more pain in my ear than when I went in, and it STILL hurts!

The part that makes me really sick to my stomach is the fact that my poor children have had to endure that torture so many times, and I held them down while it happened. I feel so ridiculously bad for them, and now I know why they scream their heads off when they have to have it done. I also know why they scream all night when they have ear infections. The pain is unbearable. It feels like someone is stabbing me in the ear. I can only hope that the torture my children have gone through with their ears will fade from their memory, because unfortunately, I will never be able to forget that.

Dora's Bath Time Buildable Playset {Review & Giveaway}

Mega Bloks

We are huge fans of Mega Bloks in this house! We have so many tubs and bags of Mega Bloks that we could probably build a whole city with them. Along with the Bloks themselves, we have playsets and even a Mega Bloks game. These Bloks are great for little hands, and are so easy to play with. The kids have had hours and hours of fun with them.

I was recently sent the Mega Bloks Dora's Bath Time buildable playset for review. This playset allows your little one to build Dora's bathroom. It comes with 23 pieces, including a bathtub, clothes hangers and a big rubber ducky, and fun bath time accessories such as Dora's hair dryer, vanity desk, decorative daisy and mirror. Of course Dora is the star of this fun playset in the form of a Build & Dress figurine.

I don't think I even need to tell you how excited Rylie was to play with this playset since this picture speaks louder than words...

Mega Bloks Dora's Bath Time

Yes, she is in her bathing suit. It is "summer" here in Florida, and unless we are going out of the house, that is what she wears all weekend.

Dora's Bath Time is a cute little play set. With all of the fun accessories and different pieces in the bathroom, it encourages children to use their imaginations. Once we got everything out of the box and put the sheet of stickers on the different pieces, Rylie was ready to explore with Dora!

Mega Bloks Dora's Bath Time

Rylie has been having a lot of fun with this playset! She pretends that Dora is getting her bath and then has to dry her hair and brush her teeth. When Dora wakes up in the morning she has to pick which skirt she wants to wear and Rylie helps her get dressed. I love watching her use her imagination and come up with different scenarios.

Mega Bloks Dora's Bath Time Mega Bloks Dora's Bath Time

We give the Mega Bloks Dora's Bath Time playset our seal of approval! It is another quality toy we love from the Mega Bloks brand. This playset can be expanded with other Mega Bloks Dora The Explorer buildable playsets for even more fun. This playset retails for around $14.99 and can be purchased at Kmart, Toys "R" Us, Wal-Mart, select Target locations and Amazon.com.

Find Your Child's Perfect Teacher

This post brought to you by Kidzmet. All opinions are 100% mine.

I think teachers are wonderful people. It may be because my own mother was a teacher for 30 years, or it may be because of all of the great teachers I had that influenced me in one way or another. I firmly believe that there are no bad teachers. Every teacher I know dedicates their lives to the profession, and if they didn't want to do it, I don't think they would have become teachers in the first place.

That said, every teacher has their own way of teaching. And every child has their own way of learning. For example, I always learned by doing. Teachers could stand up in front of the class and explain something in depth, but I usually wouldn't grasp the concept until I actually did it. So when I ended up in a class with a teacher that spent more time explaining than letting us actually practice a concept, I didn't do as well.

With Kidzmet, you can ensure that your child's teacher is a good match for them. When you create a Pairing Portrait at Kidzmet, you will receive a detailed snapshot of your child's personality type, cognitive style, multiple intelligence strengths a recommended teaching approach. You can then send this snapshot to the principal or guidance counselor at your child's school for consideration when they are planning the class mixes for the 2011-2012 school year, so they can match your child up with the right teacher.

This Pairing Portrait is FREE for parents and will only take 10 minutes to complete. That 10 minutes could be critical to determining your child's success in his or her next year of school. Make sure you check it out!

Wordless Wednesday: Swimwear Model {Linky}

Bryce's bathing suit

I want to see your Wordless (or Wordful) Wednesday posts! Link up below! And for more Wordless Wednesday fun, check out The Florida Hogans, Angelica's Awesome Adventures and Shibley Smiles. Happy WW!

Tell Us Something Good: Pool Weather Is Here

The Life of Rylie...and Bryce too!

Welcome to the first installment of Tell Us Something Good! I'm so glad you're here. Every Tuesday, my friend Andrea from Angelica's Awesome Adventures and I will be sharing something good with you. We hope that you will share something good with us too. So grab the button at the top, tell us something good on your blog, and link up your post at the linky on the bottom.

My "something good" for today is the fact that pool weather is here! We have been reaching near 90 degrees here in sunny Florida, and the best way to beat the heat is in the pool. Swimming makes for cheap and convenient fun for our family. We don't have to get dressed. We don't have to pack up half of our house to go out somewhere. We just throw on our bathing suits and go outside. Yay!

Rylie and Bryce LOVE the pool! Rylie isn't much for going under the water (yet!), but she loves to float around in her little tube. Bryce, on the other hand, is already proving to be quite the little fish. He will walk right off the steps and completely submerge himself. He comes up laughing, too!

I think we'll be getting a swim instructor out here sometime soon for lessons for both of the kids. We had someone come out and give Rylie lessons when she was 20 months old, but she screamed the entire half hour of each lesson, so I don't know how much she really learned. I want my kids to really know how to swim, so they can enjoy the pool and also be safe while they're having fun. This is, after all, how we'll be spending our summers for many years!

These pictures were taken during the kids' first swim of the season. My best friend Melissa kept the kids at her house while we were at my dad's funeral, and they spent most of the day in the pool.

Welcome summer!

OK, now it's your turn. Tell us something good...

Souplantation & Sweet Tomates April Lemon Menu {Review & Giveaway}

Souplantation & Sweet Tomatoes

One of my all time favorite lunch spots is Sweet Tomatoes! I love that you can get a different variety of food every time you visit, and everything is always so fresh. In case you aren't familiar with Souplantation & Sweet Tomatoes, it is an all-you-care-to-eat dining experience. The restaurants feature fresh produce and salads, made-from-scratch soups, hot-tossed pastas, freshly baked breads and muffins, fresh fruit, frozen yogurt, and more. The first two Souplantation restaurants were acquired by Garden Fresh Restaurant Corp in 1983 in Southern California, and as they continued to grow beyond California, the name Sweet Tomatoes was adopted.

Sweet Tomatoes April Lemon Menu

Sweet Tomatoes is currently offering their April Lemon Menu. This menu is sure to make you pucker up! We were given a Summer Lemon Salad to review. This salad contained crisp lettuce, spiced pecans, cranberries and Gorgonzola cheese. (I'm pretty sure the cheese was Gorgonzola, I can't seem to find the actual ingredients listed anywhere.) It was tossed in a creamy lemon dressing.

Sweet Tomatoes Summer Lemon Salad

The salad was DELICIOUS! My mom, Brian and I ate it for both lunch and dinner that day. The dressing had just the right amount of tang, and was creamy and covered the salad well. A little bit went a long way. Honestly, I wish this salad was offered year round.

If you want to try this salad, or anything else on the April Lemon Menu, hurry to your local Sweet Tomatoes soon. There is only one week left!

Sweet Tomatoes Catering Coupon

Did you know that Sweet Tomatoes also has a catering menu? I, personally, was not aware of that. I will definitely be looking to Sweet Tomatoes' catering menu for our summer get togethers.
Sweet Tomatoes Parents 10 Best

Sweet Tomatoes is great for kids, too! In fact, Parents Magazine recently acknowledged Souplantation/Sweet Tomatoes restaurants as one of 10 Best Restaurant Chains for families in the April issue of the magazine! Over 150 chain restaurants were considered, and Souplantation/Sweet Tomatoes restaurants were chosen for the honor thanks to its variety of healthy options and convenience, all while being fun for the whole family.

If you're looking for a healthy, delicious meal for your family, make sure you give Sweet Tomatoes a try. Visit Sweet Tomatoes online to find a location near you. While you're there, sign up for Club Veg to receive exclusive, members only savings.

If you're a regular reader of The Life of Rylie...and Bryce too!, then you know that 2011 has been a particularly crappy year for me. The kids were sick a lot at the beginning of the year. We had that crazy cancer scare with Rylie that caused her to undergo some medical testing, as if she hadn't already been going through enough with the allergy testing due to her nut allergy. A couple months ago my dog died unexpectedly. Bryce had more surgery to re-do his tubes and take his adenoids out, only to get yet another ear infection two weeks later. We found out shortly thereafter that he has to have more surgery to have a hernia repaired. And the last major tragedy that turned my world upside down was when my dad passed away two weeks ago.

I don't dare ask "what will happen next?" because inevitably, something will. I have to start focusing on the good in my life, or I will surely go insane. There is a lot of good to focus on. I have a wonderful husband who loves me with all of his heart. I have two beautiful children that light up my life. I have my mom who is my best friend, and my brother who will always be there for me. And I have some of the most awesome friends a girl can have.

My favorite radio show, The Morning Mash Up, has a day each week when they have people call in and share their good news. They say "tell us something good, because that's what we want to hear!" I always find myself smiling along with the people that call in. I thought it would be fun to bring something like that to my blog, so I teamed up with my friend Andrea from Angelica's Awesome Adventures to bring you a new, fun meme called "Tell Us Something Good..."

The Life of Rylie...and Bryce too!

Every Tuesday, we want to hear your good news! It can be something as simple as having a fun day with your family, or big news like getting married or having a baby. Hey, you can even use it an excuse to brag...about your kids, something you bought, something you won, whatever. We will also be posting our "something good". You can leave your good news in a comment on our posts, or better yet, grab our pretty button, write up a post on your blog and add it to the linky at the bottom of one of our posts. We'll be sure to stop by and check out your posts, because we want to hear about the good in your lives too!

So stop back by tomorrow for the first installment of "Tell Us Something Good...", and hopefully you'll be able to do just that!
