Spring Clean Your Home Office: Fellowes P-12C Shredder {Review & Giveaway}

Fellowes

Spring is here! I live in central Florida, and I have been enjoying this warm weather we are having. For those of you who are still getting snow, hopefully that will end for you soon. Spring is not only a time for warmer weather, but also a time for "Spring Cleaning". It is always nice to open the windows, air out your house and give everything a real good cleaning. That goes for your home office too. It's time to go through those stacks of papers and either file them away, or get rid of them.

With identity theft being a big problem in recent years, you don't want to just throw out any documents that have your personal information on them. You need to protect your information by destroying those documents. Fellowes Inc., the leading shredder manufacturer, and the Identity Theft Resource Center have teamed up this spring to offer tips to spring clean your home office:
  • Begin with the Basics: Sort through the piles of paperwork on your desk and in your office drawers. Place them into two categories: ‘save’ and ‘shred.’
  • Proper Storage: Organize the “save” pile into labeled folders and be sure to put anything confidential into a fire-proof lock box. The “shred” pile should be properly disposed of with a Cross-Cut shredder, such as a Fellowes P-12C. Cross-Cut technology is an important feature for a shredder because it provides high security, destroying confidential information into unidentifiable pieces. Equally important are enhanced safety features, such as Fellowes’ SafeSense technology, which shuts the machine down when hands come too close to the paper opening.
  • Get a Digital Makeover: Refresh your home office computer by deleting files you no longer use and backing-up important data onto an external hard drive. Clean out your inbox and change all passwords. Refreshing your computer is a good practice to follow throughout the year as well.
  • Make Life Easier: Plan ahead by purchasing organizational tools for your desk, such as computer risers or file folder holders. This will help clear clutter from your desk top while keeping things within arms reach.
  • Freshen Up: Get rid of dust and germs that easily build up on office equipment such as keyboards, telephones and cabinets. You’ll feel instantly more productive with a clean workspace.
My home office definitely needs an overhaul some spring cleaning, so I was more than happy to try out the Fellowes P-12C Shredder.
Fellowes P-12C Shredder
This shredder can shred 12 sheets of paper per pass, into cross-cut 5/32 in. x 2 in. pieces. It can also shred paper, small paper clips, credit cards and staples. It features patented SafeSense technology, which automatically shuts off the shredder when hands come too close.

The shredder came fully assembled. I was impressed at first glance, and I could tell this was a great piece of home office equipment. It is sturdy and put together very well. We started off by shredding a pile of paper that has been sitting in the middle of my workspace for weeks now, and it quickly cut the paper down into tiny pieces. The shredder that we had been using before this one couldn't handle more than four sheets at a time, and would tend to overheat and shut off if you used it too long. The P-12C shredder did not have those issues, which we were happy about. My husband had a stack of expired credit cards that needed to be properly disposed of, so we tried those next. The P-12C shredder easily destroyed those too!

Fellowes P-12C Shredder

My favorite feature of this shredder is the SafeSense technology. With curious little hands always inspecting stuff they shouldn't be around here, that is a great feature to have. The kids are not usually in our office area, but kids are quick and curious, so safety features like this are a HUGE plus! Of course we tested this technology and I'm happy to say that my husband still has all of his fingers!

The Fellowes P12-C Shredder can be purchased at Target for $89.99. If you are looking to spring clean your home office, I highly recommend this shredder!

Great Mother's Day Gift Idea: The Vintage Pearl {Review & Giveaway}

The Vintage Pearl

I am so excited to bring you another giveaway from The Vintage Pearl! Some of you may remember that one of the very first product reviews I posted on this blog was a review of my Dainty Drops Necklace from The Vintage Pearl. I still wear it all the time, and love it as much as the day I wrote that review.

Just in case you aren't familiar with The Vintage Pearl, let me tell you a little bit about this great company. The Vintage Pearl was started in 2007, when a stay at home mom started making jewelry. It has since grown into a much larger company and now even has a retail store.

The Vintage Pearl creates unique and meaningful handstamped jewelry and keepsakes. Each piece is handcrafted from start to finish with care in our studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We use raw sterling silver, freshwater pearls and birthstone crystals in our creations.

Every unique piece I have seen from The Vintage Pearl has been absolutely beautiful. Their necklaces, bracelets, keychains, leather cuffs, earrings, dog tags, and even baby spoons make great gifts for everyone!

Speaking of gifts, we all know that Mother's Day is quickly approaching. Even though I am now a mother, to me, Mother's Day is still all about my mom. I let her know all the time how much I appreciate everything she does for me, but this is the one day to really make all about her! When I had the opportunity to work with The Vintage Pearl again, I knew I wanted to find a beautiful handstamped keepsake just for her.

There are so many pieces to choose from that I really had a hard time selecting one. I finally decided on the Layered Circle Of Love. This piece comes with two circles, one just bigger than the other, with your choice of writing on each circle. You can also add a pearl, birthstone or charm to the middle. On the outer circle I wanted something written about the never ending love that my mom has for my children, and with the help of some friends, we came up with "mama's love is eternal". (The kids call her "mama".) I had my kids' names written on the inner circle.

The ordering process was easy, and I received my necklace in just a few days. It is absolutely perfect! It was packaged nicely in a small mesh bag, and even came with a cleaning cloth.

The Vintage Pearl Layered Circle Of Love

These pictures don't really do it justice at all, but you can see from this picture how nice it looks. It is a simple piece, but still beautiful at the same time!

The Vintage Pearl Layered Circle Of Love

By posting this review, I am obviously ruining the Mother's Day surprise, but I know my mom is going to love this necklace! Happy Mother's Day, mom! Just like my Dainty Drops Necklace is to me, it will be a constant reminder to her of her two grandchildren that she loves so much!

If you are looking for a unique gift for your mother for Mother's Day, or a beautiful, custom handstamped piece for yourself, I highly recommend the Vintage Pearl! There are so many great pieces to choose from. A few of my other favorites are the Bitty Blossoms, Chunky Love Necklace and Vintage Baby Feet With Names.

The Vintage Pearl Bitty Blossoms The Vintage Pearl Chunky Love The Vintage Pearl Baby Feet

Regardless of which piece you choose, you will be getting a beautiful, unique keepsake, handstamped just for you. The customer service at The Vintage Pearl is awesome, and everyone I have ever worked with has been absolutely wonderful.

School Fundraising With Big Event Fundraising {Review}

Big Event Fundraising

When I was in school, I used to love fundraisers! Of course the main reason was because of the prizes you got at the end. My brother and I would always try so hard to get the "big" prizes, and thanks to our parents, we usually did.

I work for a very large company and it seems like there is always at least one fundraising brochure circulating around our offices, or on the tables in the break room. I always try to buy something, because I know how badly those kids want to win prizes. More than that, though, I know that our schools need money, and I'm glad to help.

Big Event Fundraising makes school fundraising easy, fun and exciting! They have helped their customers increase school fundraising results by an average of 93%! How do they do that? By motivating students to participate with their great prize programs. The more students that participate, the more sales your organization will receive, and in turn, more profit.

Big Event Fundraising has a large variety of school fundraising ideas. From the traditional Christmas wrapping paper and gourmet cookie dough, to specialty items like jewelry and items for the home, there are many different brochures to choose from. Big Event Fundraising will help you design your fundraiser and do all of the legwork for you. They will send you a kickoff kit and individual fundraising packets, and ensure a smooth delivery of the products sold.

So what makes Big Event Fundraising different from other fundraising companies? The prizes! Honestly, this is the first I have heard of prizes like this. Rather than offering cheap toys as incentives to sell, they offer prize programs such as a Super Party, Super Splash Party, Magic Show and Reptile Adventures Show. Students sell just a few items to earn admission to these great events, and are then rewarded for selling more with special treatment at the events, cash, and great prizes like $100 online gift certificates and iPods. I don't know of anything that would motivate kids more than a party with inflatables, laser tag, midway games, a live DJ and more! Or maybe even a magic show that is so much fun, kids won't even realize they are learning too!

If you are looking for a great fundraiser for your organization, make sure you check out Big Event Fundraising! You can also follow them on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with the latest news.

Slumber Party

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Ours was busy as usual, but I'm happy to say that I can finally see my dining room table again. Yay!

We started off our weekend with a slumber party Friday night. Rylie's friend Angelica spent the night, and the girls had so much fun!

First off, I have to say that I was honored that our friends trusted us with the care of their little girl. Rylie has only been gone overnight with my parents, and I have to admit that I wouldn't feel comfortable letting her stay with just anyone. I would have to really trust someone and know that my kids were in good hands in order to let them spend the night away from home. There aren't many people that fit that bill. So it made me feel really good to know that Angelica's parents felt comfortable leaving her with us.

The girls started off the evening playing dress up. They got Rylie's dress up trunk out, put on some fancy tops and high heels, and gathered their purses and magic wands. First they went to the "Rain Festival" (whatever that is) and then they went off to the Strawberry Festival. Here they are getting in their ice cream truck to drive to one of their fun festivals...

After dinner they played a little more before it was time for a bath and jammies. Once they had their pjs on, they settled in on the couch for a popsicle and some Dora.

We pulled the futon mattress in Rylie's room so they could sleep together in real slumber party fashion. We got them upstairs and let them get their giggles out before we said goodnight.

We finally said goodnight and went downstairs. That certainly wasn't the last time we were up there though.

Those two little stinkers were having so much fun! They giggled themselves to sleep, I think. Surprisingly, it only took them about a half hour, and us two trips upstairs, before they drifted off into dreamland. Granted it was WAY later than Rylie's normal bed time, but our house was completely quiet around 10:15. Great! Do you think they slept in on Saturday morning? Not so much.

They were up there giggling again at around 7:30, and Bryce decided he needed to be up too. So much for sleeping in. We spent the morning painting fingernails and toenails with Piggy Paint, playing dress up (again) and pretty much playing with every toy they could.

I had so much fun watching those girls play. And honestly? As much as I wanted to just sit down and relax Friday evening, I enjoyed the giggling that was going on when they were supposed to be going to sleep. It was so cute to watch them on Rylie's monitor. We couldn't help but laugh.

I can't wait until Rylie is older and has real slumber parties. I'm really looking forward to having a house full of little girls giggling until all hours of the night. I remember how much fun my childhood slumber parties were, and I can't wait until Rylie and her friends can have that kind of fun!

Have a great week, my friends!

Saturday Playdate - Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy

Welcome to another fun Saturday Playdate! Today we're playing with Lisa from Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy! Lisa's blog is one of those a-little-of-this-and-a-little-of-that blogs that I enjoy reading. She talks about family life with her three boys, parenting, events and has some reviews and giveaways too.

I hope you will check out Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy when you're done here. Give Lisa some comment love and let her know you stopped by from the playdate.

Thank you so much to LeeAnn, for letting me be part of Saturday Playdate. My name is Lisa and I blog at Oh Boy Oh Boy Oh Boy about anything and everything that pertains to my life as a full time working mom of three boys.  Because my blog is sort of all over the place topic wise, because really, isn't life as a mom really kind of like that, its sometimes hard for me to pick a single topic for guest posts.  For this post I went with something that other moms have looked to me for guidance on.  Mind you, I am not an expert but I do have a few years of real world experience, so here are my thoughts on Raising a Reader.

I am a mom of boys.  I am a mom of boys in a digital age.  I am a mom of boys who read, even in a digital age.  I am a mom of boys who read really well for their age, even in a digital age.

So even though I am not a reading expert, I don't have a degree in education, I am often looked to by other mom for some confirmation that they are doing things right.  Unfortunately, I don't believe there is a magic formula.  As in all things related to parenting, you can do all the right things but some kids just won't want to follow your lead.

But I can share what we've done.  When my first son was born, I bought all the typical baby items, clothes, stroller, diapers, car seat, etc. but I also started buying books.  I have a love of children's book so I had a pretty decent collection before he was even born.  I bought colorful board books in all sizes and topics from colors and moods to animals and trucks.  I bought lift a flap books and texture books and bath books.  And I also began a collection of Disney, Dr Seuss and other great books that I loved in my own childhood.

Then when he got just big enough to sit up and even look at a book, I began to read to him.  When he was just a couple months old, I was pregnant again and sitting and reading to him was the easiest thing to do.  But it was also something he really enjoyed.  Snuggling up in our big recliner and reading.  I guess I should really say 'looking' at books as opposed to reading them.  We had fun with books.  We talked about the pictures.  I made up stories and read sometimes when he was really being patient enough to sit through the story.  He learned many animals by spending hours with one book full of animals that we'd look at, tell the names of and make the sounds they made.  Books were FUN!

I constantly bought new books, often from the dollar store.  There were books that he was allowed to really look at himself, a full shelf of them and then the nicer books were up higher and to be shared with mom.  Books were special.

Many things have changed in our life over the years but books have been a constant daily thing.  Even on the busiest day we have read together as a family.  Each night each of the boys picks out a book and we read them out loud.  I am still constantly buying books as their interests change.  We still have many board books but now we have Junie B Jones, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, GooseBumps and lots of sports related books.

Eight years later I have strong readers.  My oldest son tested above an 8th grade reading level before the end of first grade.  And my middle son is testing about two full grade levels ahead right now.

While there are definitely real hurdles some kids face in learning to read, the biggest and most common is simply getting enough practice.  If you start early instilling a true love of reading, it won't be a chore to get your kids to read and if you keep them supplied with things they love, they will keep reading.  Thanks to the high volume of online reviews for so many things now, it's becoming easier and easier to find books for your kids to meet their interests.  Before you spend a ton of money, don't forget to check out your local library to see if a particular series is a hit with your kids.

If your kids hit a phase where they don't pick up a book for a bit, here are a few tricks you might consider:
  • family reading time.  Take time where everyone reads either together or each their own book but all at the same time.
  • library reading programs. Many local libraries reward kids for reading a certain number of pages or minutes a day or week.
  • try and eReader.  Even though my boys love to read, there is always extra interest in reading an eBook on my smart phone.
  • encourage your child to read a book before watching the movie based on the book.  My oldest finished 3 of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books before the first movie came out when I encouraged him to work on the series before the movie hit theaters.
While there aren't any guarantees, it can never hurt if we set up an atmosphere that fosters a love of reading from the very beginning to help our chances of having strong readers.

Thanks for stopping by for our playdate! I hope you had fun! If you would like to come over for a playdate, let me know in a comment or an email.

Build A Dream Playhouses {Review & Giveaway}

Build a Dream Playhouses

What is it with kids and cardboard? I can buy my kids the fanciest toys, and a lot of times, they just want to play with the box. They have had so much fun pushing each other around in big diaper boxes, and making "forts" out of big cardboard boxes. When I heard about Build A Dream Playhouses, I instantly knew these would be a hit with Rylie and Bryce!

Build a Dream makes cardboard playhouses that allow children to create the playhouse of their dreams. These playhouses make for hours of imaginative play, which is very important for children and their developing minds. The blank cardboard allows the products to be colored, painted, and decorated the way YOUR child wants it. There are no limitations when it comes to creating their masterpiece. These eco-friendly playhouses are extremely durable and safe.

We received the Imagine Wagon for review. Brian recently told Rylie a story about when he was a little boy and he used to wait for the ice cream man to come, and how excited he would get to go buy ice cream. She listened intently as he told her about his favorite treats from the Ice Cream Man. When I was making my choice between all of the awesome Build a Dream products, I just had to pick this cute ice cream truck.

Build a Dream Imagine Wagon

Rylie was so excited to see the big box delivered to our house. I think she wanted to open it just so she could play with the box. But when she found out that she got to color all of the pieces inside, she was even more excited. We laid out the different parts of the Imagine Wagon on the floor, gave the kids some washable markers, and let them scribble all over it.

Build a Dream Playhouses Build a Dream Playhouses
Build a Dream Playhouses

Now remember, my kids are 3 and 1, so of course the Imagine Wagon isn't going to come out looking like the one in the picture. They did have fun coloring on it for a little while, but they were more excited for Daddy to put it together so they could play in it. I think that older kids would have a great time designing their playhouse. There is a lot of surface to color, though, so I would definitely recommend paint for the older kids.

Once they were done "coloring" it, Daddy started putting it together...

Build a Dream Playhouses

It was actually very easy to put together. I think it took Brian about 15 minutes to fully assemble our Imagine Wagon. It probably would have gone much quicker without his two little "helpers". :-)

My kids absolutely LOVE their new ice cream truck! We have had this for a few weeks now and they are always in it. It has become a permanent fixture in our family room. I love watching them role play Daddy's story of the ice cream man. One will get in and the other will come up to the window and get their ice cream. It is SO CUTE!

Even though it looks like an ice cream truck, they also imagine that it is a bus. They bring chairs in it and one of them will drive the other to school. Even though Bryce can't talk yet, he really interacts with his sister and plays along well with whatever scenario she comes up with.

The Imagine Wagon is HUGE! There is plenty of room in it for both of the kids. Rylie even took a nap in it one day. It is also very sturdy. We have moved it several times, and my kids have been in and out of it more times than I can count, and it still looks like new. The bottom pieces fold up so that it doesn't tip easily.

Build a Dream Playhouses Build a Dream Playhouses

As I said, the kids play in this almost every day. It has now been adorned with stickers on the front, and some pictures on the side. And when they want to color, I give them the markers and they decorate it some more.

Build a Dream Playhouses

We are 100% satisfied with our Imagine Wagon, and I highly recommend Build a Dream Playhouses to everyone!

Build A Dream Playhouses range in price from $39.95 to $69.95, with free shipping to the Continental United States. There are six different products to choose from, including a Snack Shack, Dream Machine and Kitchen.

Disclosure: This is my honest opinion. I received the Imagine Wagon at no cost for the purpose of this review. No other compensation was received. A big Thank You to Build A Dream Playhouses for providing the giveaway prize!
