What do you consider a "luxury item"? For many of us, the answer to that question might be expensive cars, jewelry, nice furniture, or maybe even our daily latte from an overpriced coffee shop. Would you believe that there are women and girls out there that consider sanitary protection a luxury item? It is a sad fact that something I take for granted and am able to obtain easily is considered a "luxury item" to adolescent girls in developing countries.
The lack of affordable sanitary protection in these developing countries can have devastating lifelong consequences for girls. Could you imagine if you didn't have protection during that "time of the month"? What would you do? Some of these young women resort to dangerous alternatives like finding used pads to wear or making their own pads from dangerous materials. Other girls just avoid school altogether for the duration of their periods, which creates missed school and gaps in their education.
Huru International is an organization that was formed in 2008 to develop a cost-effective solution to this often-overlooked crisis. They provide free "Huru Kits" to young girls living in poverty in order to empower them to become more self-sufficient. These kits include reusable sanitary napkins and other essential feminine products, as well as life-saving information on HIV/AIDS prevention.
The o.b brand recognized this crisis and has created a Share It Forward Facebook campaign to raise money for Huru International. Through November, o.b. will donate $1 (up to 25,000) for every person who visits the o.b. Outreach Tab on the Mighty. Small. Movement Facebook page and shares a message about Huru International's mission.
This is such a great cause, and I hope you will help. I recently shared this message with my Facebook friends, and I am asking you to do the same. Sharing this message will only take a minute of your time. Here's how you can help:
- Step 1: Like the o.b. Mighty. Small. Movement Facebook page if you haven't already, and then click on the o.b. Outreach tab in the left sidebar.
- Step 2: Select your state from the drop down box.
- Step 3: Put a check mark next to the box that says you've read the Terms & Conditions.
- Step 4: Click the pink "click to share" button to post the message on your wall.
- Step 5: Spread the word!
Disclosure: I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of o.b. and received a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.
