I have a friend who thinks our economy is going to collapse within the next two years. This collapse will then result in civil unrest and most likely a civil war. All he talks about these days is emergency preparedness and how I should spend every penny I have on silver, because pretty soon, the US dollar will be worth nothing.
Not only do we have to invest in as much silver as possible, my friend also tells me that Brian and I should be buying food insurance so that we will be able to feed our children when the food is gone. You know, because the looting will clean out the grocery stores and there will be no more food. Once things calm down, our neighbors will all band together and plant crops, but until those crops grow, we will need freeze dried meals to sustain us. My friend is constantly visiting websites like BuyEmergencyFoods.com to see if they are offering any deals on food storage and freeze dried meals. I’m not even kidding.
Do you all remember that TV series Jericho, which was about the aftermath of a nuclear attack? That is what I envision when my friend talks about the future. No food and no electricity, and everyone holed up in their homes with M16s pointed out the window. Could you imagine?
I realize that the dire state of the economy is no laughing matter, but when my friend goes on a tirade about how we better make sure we have a weapons stockpile so that Brian can guard our home (and our crops!) while the kids and I sleep, I can’t help but shake my head. Which, of course, makes him mad. I then have to hear about how Brian and I have our heads in the sand, and that we better not come knocking on his door looking for food when this happens. He does say that he will feed my kids, though, since it isn’t their fault that their parents are so affected by the “normalcy bias” and don’t believe this can happen.
What do you think? Is my friend crazy? Or is he going to be the one shaking his head while Brian and I are dodging gunfire trying to get the kids to his house for a meal?

Hopefully - your friend's description of what is to come is really on the extreme side of things ... but then we only need to look at a country that is wrapped in poverty to see what can happen when people are desperate for survival.
Perhaps, a return to a simpler way of living (people living within their means) may be the answer to ease the economic crisis.
It is scary ... if you consider what is happening in Greece and now Italy ... what has been happening in the Middle East ..
Good thought provoking post!! xo HHL
I think your friend is a crazy extremist. LOL
We keep hearing about how horrible the unemployment rate is. Even with a 9% unemployment rate, that means 91% of people still have jobs. That's a lot. They also just announced that unemployment hit the lowest rate in 7 months.
I am one of those people that think the real thing that's keeping the economy in the pooper is the constant fear mongering on tv. If the news stopped talking about how horrible awful things were, people and businesses and investors wouldn't be so scared and things would instantly start improving.
I think (hope) your friend might be going a little on the extreme side, but I do think he may have some points. I think we are in for a wild ride with this economy before it comes anywhere close to getting better. I think we are all going to learn how to live very different lifestyles because life is going to become very difficult. I do pray that your friend is wrong on the food and needing to protect our families in such an extreme way. I do think there will be a civil war of some type, though, in the end. It may be purely political, but we are clearly seeing separation in our country already.
