It is starting to feel like fall out there, even in Central Florida. The air is a little dryer, and the temperatures are starting to drop. I really enjoy this time of year. We always have fun at fall festivals and Halloween parties, we enjoy the yummy food that Thanksgiving brings, and then we get excited to gear up for Christmas. There is one thing I don't like about this time of the year, though. The sickies.
Not only is fall upon us, flu season is too. My kids and I were vaccinated for the flu this year, so I'm not overly concerned about us getting the actual flu, but there are many other viruses that are also spreading from person to person during the fall and winter months. Since both of my kids are in daycare, we tend to have several sick days from now until the spring.
The one thing that has always been a necessity in our house (during all seasons) is an accurate thermometer. When my kids were born, the pediatrician told us to always use a rectal thermometer, but once they were old enough to know what was going on, that didn't work so well. We purchased an ear thermometer, which seems to work pretty well, providing my children didn't have an ear infection. Unfortunately, though, when they do catch a virus, their ears are usually what it attacks. So what can we use that is more gentle than a rectal thermometer, and more accurate than an ear thermometer? The answer is a Temporal Artery Thermometer.
The Exergen TemporalScanner is a kinder, gentler and more exact thermometer. It is an infrared thermometer that reads a temperature in just two seconds, by capturing the naturally emitted heat from skin over the temporal artery.
So how does the TemporalScanner work?
As you gently stroke the thermometer across the forehead crossing over the temporal artery, the sensor in its probe performs two processes:
- First it scans like a video camera, capturing naturally emitted infrared heat from the arterial blood supply at about 1000 “frames” per second, locking in the highest temperature it senses and;
- Second, at the same time, a patented system measures the ambient temperature of the site where the temperature is being taken. The patented "arterial heat balance" (AHB) software then synthesizes the two separate readings to accurately determine and display body temperature.
The Exergen TemporalScanner was very easy to use. You simply press it to the center of the forehead, depress the button, lightly slide it across the forehead into the hairline, and then release the button. Brian and I tried it on ourselves a couple of times just to make sure we were getting normal readings, and after we figured out how to hold it correctly, it worked great. We took Bryce's temperature, and it was a normal 98.5 degrees.
My favorite feature about this thermometer is that it is non-invasive. Kids do not have to be afraid of getting something stuck in their ear (or anywhere else for that matter), nor do they have to hold still with a thermometer under their tongue or underarm. It is so quick and easy that it can even be done while a child is sleeping, provided they are in a position where you can get to at least one side of the forehead. The temporal artery thermometer is so gentle, in fact, that kids WANT to have their temperature taken...
Another normal reading! Whew!
Even though we have not been able to use the Exergen TemporalScanner for a fever, so far I am impressed and I definitely recommend giving it a try. This thermometer has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of less than $50, but I found it online starting at around $32 on Amazon
~*~One of my readers is going to win an Exergen TemporalScanner!~*~
Disclosure: All opinions are my own. I received the Exergen TemporalScanner at no cost for the purpose of this review. No other compensation was received. A big Thank You to Exergen for providing the giveaway prize!

Currently I just use one of the digital drugstore brand thermometers so I would love to have this one!
I learned that these actually give accurate readings if used right! I've always been scared to use them!

I learned the they give a more accurate reading than ear thermometers.
I also use a digital thermometer

right now we have an ear thermometer from CVS
I didn't know until now that the temporal artery had anything to do with how these forehead thermomteters work. Duh!
I currently use a digital oral thermometer...the kids definitely don't like it when they're not feeling well :-/

I NEED one of these! Allison thought I was killing her when I tried one in her ear and she thinks I'm stabbing her when we use it in her armpit.
I would love to try this!
I didn't know that the temporal temperature won't vary but underarm/under tongue can be misleading.
I currently use my hand as a thermometer! Our digital, under the tongue thermometer died, and I haven't replaced it yet! so this would come in handy :)
I currently use a cheap digital one
I learned the they give a more accurate reading which is great
I currently use a digital one that goes under the arm, but it takes forever to read and I don't know how accurate it really is!

I learned that the TemporalScanner Thermometer has been clinically tested for accuracy compared to rectal thermometers and temperature sensors inserted in the heart during course of patient treatment and accepted for use in major hospitals, making it the ideal thermometer for use with newborns, infants, children or adults.

I use a standard in the mouth digital thermometer
I heard the thermometer is sensitive to ambient temperature, is it?
Yes, it is sensitive to ambient temperature, which is part of the reason it is so accurate. But, as long as the thermometer is in approximately the same ambient temperature as the individual whose temperature is being taken, you don't have to be concerned.
I use just a digital thermometer
I learned The TemporalScanner has patented software, providing arterial heat balance.

I don't have a thermometer at the moment, so I use my hand. : (
I learned that Arterial temperature is the same temperature as the blood flowing from the heart. It is the best determinate of body temperature.
I am currently still using the one that hospitals give you when you have your baby. My 5yr olds broke,so luckily i still had my 4yr olds, but i dont think its accurate because one of them can feel very very hot & it say they are not hot at all. With hard times we havent had any extra cash to replace it even through it is a very important item to have if you have children,so i also use my best judgement because really thats all you can do..

I learned that it takes pictures like a video camera & also he TemporalScanner has patented software, providing arterial heat balance. This unique process determines temperature by accurately measuring the balance between the tissues warming from arterial blood and tissues cooling (warming) caused by heat loss (gain) to the environment. This sounds really cool & i would be forever grateful to have this to use on my children.

We have a thermometer that needs to go under the tongue.
I learned, "Measure only the side of the head that is exposed. Any covering, hair, hat, etc. will prevent the heat from dissipating, and would cause the reading to be falsely high. This also applies if one side of the head is into a pillow."
I have one from Walgreens that I swear does the same temperature no matter who we use it on. Would love to have one like this - it would be so reassuring to know that the temp shown is as accurate as if I was at the pediatrician's office.

The last thermometer we had was an oral (mercury) thermometer. It broke (after many, many years of use) and I haven't replaced it. mcgillrmcgill(at)charter(dot)net
I learned that you should slide the thermometer in a reasonably straight line across the forehead, midway between the eyebrows and the upper hairline, and not down the side of the face. Midway on the forehead area, the temporal artery is less than 2 millimeters below the skin surface, but down the side of the face, it is much deeper and less accurately measured. mcgillrmcgill(at)charter(dot)net

I use one somewhat like this (a very cheap brand I might add) but it goes crazy on me all the time. I can take a temperature and it will show that my kid has a fever and then wait 5 seconds and do it again and it'll say their temperature is normal. I've even replaced the batteries but that didn't help. I think it may have been dropped one too many times.
