Picture this: You and your husband finally get up the guts to take the kids on a plane across the country to see family that you haven't seen in a while. You spend two days packing (because you know when you have kids to pack for, you have to take half of your house), you double check to make sure you have everything, then you load up and head to the airport. You didn't bring your stroller because the kids won't sit in it anyway, and you didn't feel like having to deal with checking that, so instead they are running around the airport while you try to check in. You're trying to wrangle your kids, while your husband is dealing with getting boarding passes and checking the bags. All of the sudden you hear "sir, this bag is over 50 pounds, that will be a $90 charge". WHAT!?!?!?!
Being slapped with an extra fee because your bag is too heavy is the last thing any traveler needs, especially parents who are already stressed out enough just trying to make the trip. The extra fees for overweight luggage aren't small, either. I haven't flown in a while (we haven't quite gotten up the nerve yet), and I had no idea what the luggage fees were like, so I was shocked to see this fee chart on Expedia.com. On airlines like Delta and US Airways, you have to pay $25 for your first bag, $35 for your second, and $125 for bags after that. Those bags must be under 50 pounds, or the fee goes up to $90, or even $175 if it is over 71 pounds. Wow! A couple large bags could end up costing more than your seat!
Now you can avoid any surprises, and ridiculous fees, at the airport with this great luggage scale from EatSmart Products! Never pay overweight luggage charges again with the Precision Voyager Digital Luggage Scale!
The EatSmart Precision Voyager Luggage Scale is an ultraportable, lightweight travel accessory designed for anyone from the casual vacationer to the road warrior. After easily clipping onto the handle of your suitcase or bag, EatSmart's proprietary two handed SmartGrip design allows for easier lifting of even the heaviest bags. When your scale registers the weight, the scale will beep and your luggage weight will appear on the screen instantly. Its compact, durable design allows travelers to place it in their suitcase and bring on many trips. Never worry about paying unexpected baggage fees again!
Features
1. EatSmart's proprietary two handed SmartGrip designed Handles
2. Compact & Lightweight Design
3. Durable Strap & Easy Clip Buckle
4. 2 Measurement Modes: Pounds / Kilograms
5. Graduation: .1 oz / .1 gram
6. Max Weight: 110 pounds / 50 kilograms
7. 20 second Auto-Turnoff
8. Includes Lithium Battery
Like I said, we haven't yet gotten up the nerve to travel, so we packed up some towels in a suitcase to test the scale out. Here's my world traveling husband, ready to go...
The scale is so easy to use! You just attach it around the handle of your suitcase, turn it on, and lift. That's all there is to it! It will beep when it has the proper measurement.
We lifted it several times, and got within .1 of the same measurement each time. The scale is very lightweight, so it can be easily packed in your suitcase, since you know when you go on vacation, you always come back with more than you went with. Just make sure you leave about a pound available in your suitcase for the scale.
The Precision Voyager Digital Luggage Scale can be purchased on Amazon
Like I said, we haven't gotten up the nerve to travel by air with the kids yet, but we are planning on it soon. I am so glad to have this scale so we can avoid as much stress as possible. I highly recommend this to anyone who travels!

When we travel, the kids actually each have their own ipod touches that they use to do their schoolwork on and play games, watch movies, etc... It makes a 7 hour trip go by so quickly for them and they are still doing their schoolwork on the road :)

I have been traveling with my 14 and 12 yr old sons since they were babies ! They pack their own backpacks and are responsible for carrying them with snacks and busy work (ipods, phones) or homework. If we have an overnight stay before our final destination, I pack a separate bag with all our necessities instead of opening up everyones cases.

Pack a disposable camping potty or two. Pack no spill bubbles, a puzzle or coloring books with colored pencils NO CRAYONS, some favorite snacks, hand held electronics w/ headset, pack a travel game like Go-UNO, books on CD and or/ Adventures in Odessy CDs, and LOTS of low sugar snacks and a few drinks. Give each child old enough a map to mark the travel route on and a disposable camera to take pictures at places you stop and a journal to write/draw about the trip as they go. (can you tell we've done this a time or two?)
My best tip for traveling is to make a check list for what to pack days before actually packing so you avoid forgetting something important.

Roll clothes. They take up less space so you can pack more if needed and they don't wrinkle as easy.

I always make a packing list for each member of the family. I do this a couple weeks ahead of time and keep checking it to make sure it is complete that way I don't forget things when I actually pack the bags.

My best tip, is that i have a spreadsheet of everything that i need to take on a trip. I have made a ton of copies of it, so whenever we go anywhere, I can wip one of them out and check off everything as i go. I have a column for my hubby, my 2 1/2 year old daughter, and me, so that nothing is missed...and i have "peace" of mind!!

wear comfy slip on shoes, also wear layers, its easy to add or subtract in order to get comfy.
Roll your clothes instead of folding them, so they don't get wrinkled in your suitcase.

When travelling I always make a photo copy of the passports and credit cards we are taking. Leaving the copies in the hotel safe, if something gets lost or stolen it makes it easier to report haveing the numbers in hand.

I use gallon size ziploc bags to pack the kids clothes when we go on trips. I put their underwear, socks, pants & shirt in one bag and zip it up. You can pack a lot more in one suitcase by doing this & then I just hand the kids a bag each morning of their clothes. We have 3 kids and it really cuts down on luggage to pack like that.

Make lists of things to bring (I start the list a few days out so I have time to buy whatever we're missing) and cross them out as they go in the bag.
If you're going international, take the convertors with you for your electric items and things that need charged.
If you have children, take the car seat, it keeps them comfy and calm on the plane ride.

And one more tip for those who might not have come across this yet...travel weights may be different in other countries! Know before you go. We paid a small fortune to bring home luggage once that weighed in under 50 lbs at home (the weight limit of our US carrier).

My best travel tip is to roll your clothes when placing in the suitcase to avoid wrinkles... Works for me...
when packing kids stuff we have always put each days complete outfit in a gallon size ziploc bag and wrote the day on it.. that way the kids can pull it out and get dressed without tearing everything apart. it works great when sending kids to camp and stuff too

The best travel advice is what I was told once: The reason it is called luggage is because you have to lug it around. Coordinate your outfits and pack about half of what you think you'll "need".

Traveling is easier for me if I remember to bring snacks - mixed nuts and fruit. I get irritable when I'm hungy, and even more irritable when I have to pay exorbitant priced for bad airport food!

My best tips for travelling with kids are take plenty of things to do that are compact but interesting and also new or haven't been seen for a while! Something like a tag reader would be perfect for a 5 year old! When I travelled on my own with my 6 month old we took a night flight to make it easier for us both and he slept most of the way!
