I'm Making Cupcakes

Well, this should be interesting. As you all know, Rylie's third birthday is this weekend. Now that we have this tree nut allergy to deal with, I have to be careful when it comes to cakes and cookies. It is nearly impossible to buy a cake that doesn't come with a tree nut warning! Last weekend I called around and every place I called puts tree nut warnings on their cakes. (Again, that really irritates me because these warnings seem to be on everything, but that's a whine for a different day.) I was getting desperate and was about to start calling around to private bakeries, where I figured I would be paying some ridiculous amount for a simple sheet cake, when my friend Debi suggested I just make cupcakes.

Hahahahaha! Me? Make cupcakes? Now, I do enjoy baking, but I don't really like to bake things when 50 or so people will be eating them. I'm always afraid I'll screw something up and my goodies will taste horrible, or I'll burn them, or worst of all a hair will fall out of my head and land in the batter. I don't know if that has ever happened to you all, but I bit into something someone made one time and could have flossed my teeth with the hair that was in there. Barf! And not only that, I don't know how to decorate a cupcake to save my life. Sure, my Cupcake Cuties came out decently, but I chalk that up to pure luck. So yeah, I didn't really want the responsibility of making the treats for Rylie's party.

Lucky for me, my friend Debi loves to make cupcakes, so she offered to come up Friday and help. Yay! So I went out this past weekend and bought cake mix that didn't come laden with tree nut allergy warnings, frosting in a can that I'm assured will make decorating super easy, spray food coloring and sprinkles, all in pink, blue and purple since those are Rylie's favorite colors. I also bought that awesome Wilton Cupcake Stand to display these fabulous cupcakes on at the party.

This should be fun. I guess I better learn how to bake and decorate, since I will probably have to make cakes and cupcakes for our family's birthday parties from now on. And what better way to do it than to just jump right in? LOL I'm hoping for the best and going for something like this...

I'll let you know next week how they turned out. Or maybe I won't. ;-)

I'd much rather make cupcakes than an actual cake! You'll do fine - take lots of pics!!

If I lived closer I'd come and help! I love to bake. I made cupcakes for Cam's "family" party last Monday. I let the kids decorate them with sprinkles which was ALL KINDS A MESSY, but they had a lot of fun. Walmart sells sprinkles for $1 so I had 10 different colors to choose from. Although, if you want something gorgeous to display, then I wouldn't do that. LOL!

I'm loving that cupcake stand...I think I need one! :)

mmm, cupcakes!

Or you should make cakeballs! Those are pretty easy!

The tree nut warning is because nearly everything is processed on shared equipment, so trace amounts of oils could be transferred into foods that don't contain nuts.

Good luck with the baking and decorating. My husband decided he wants to bake the cake and cupcakes for my daughter's birthday party on the 22nd. She's getting flower designs. :)

What design are you trying for Rylie's cupcakes?

Hey-I took a Wilton cake decorating class this year before Gage's birthday and I, too suck at all things decorating, etc. If you are making cupcakes, get a 1M tip from Wilton from your local craft store and a decorator bag and you can put big pretty swirls on the top of the cupcakes in like 2 seconds flat AND they look like the ones you can buy from the store. http://www.wilton.com/technique/1M-Swirl

Good luck!

You need to give yourself more credit...I am sure you can make some cupcakes :) You are better off doing it yourself, this way you know what is in it. And it will probably be mucher cheaper too. I am sure they will taste and look great. And nice of Debi to help :) Be sure to take a pic...
