I want to see your Wordless (or Wordful) Wednesday posts! Link up below! And for more Wordless Wednesday fun, check out The Florida Hogans, Angelica's Awesome Adventures and Shibley Smiles. Happy WW!

Vacation!

I'm on vacation! Well, I don't know how much of a "vacation" it is when you're traveling 7 hours each way in the car with two toddlers. :-) Mama and I are taking the kids to Alabama to visit my aunt and cousins. Hmmmm, maybe Brian is actually the one on vacation? We were supposed to leave yesterday, but since I was diagnosed with strep throat on Sunday, I needed a couple of days for those antibiotics to kick in so I don't go up there infecting everyone.

We have made this a Christmas tradition. We weren't able to go last year since my Grandpa passed and everyone was here for his funeral, but we try to go every year after Christmas. We all have so much fun! The kids all get another Christmas, and it is so nice being with family.

Two years ago we went to the "Holiday Spectacular", and we're looking forward to going again this year. It is this big thing out in the woods with tons and tons of lights and Christmas decorations. We all bundle up and head out. First we have dinner by the campfire, where you can roast marshmallows too.

Then we check out all of the cute displays and the awesome lights.

I'm dreading the 7 hour drive, but I'm really looking forward to spending time with my family. Other than my parents and my brother, my aunt and her family are pretty much it. We have a small family for sure, but we are all super close. We're going to have a great time!

I know I've been MIA lately, and I probably will be most of this week, too. I'm really sorry about that, but I will definitely get caught up with you all when I get back. I hope everyone has a Happy New Year!

Christmas 2010

Even though it got off to a rough start with Rylie's ER visit on Christmas Eve, we still had a pretty good Christmas. I really should be packing for our vacation right now, but I wanted to get these pictures up before I left. Who really wants to see Christmas posts a week from now?

OK, so, here we go...

Here are the kids checking out what Santa left. Rylie was soooo excited to check everything out, and kept telling Bryce to look at everything.

She pretty much "helped" him open all of his presents, and at first was more concerned with helping him than opening her own.

They were both so good about putting all of the ripped up paper in the garbage bag. In fact, neither one of them seemed to want any of it on the floor.

Rylie took the present opening very seriously.

And just as I thought, Bryce LOVED his Tickle Me Elmo. He kept going back to it and would just squat down and giggle at it.

Bryce took the cleaning up a little too far. He started trying to throw away his sister's presents.

Once Rylie opened the markers and the pad of paper that went with the easel, Christmas morning was pretty much over. All she wanted to do was color and had no desire to open the rest of her presents. She still just wants to color all day long. She loves that easel!

After coloring for a while, we got ready for Brian's mom, step-dad and aunt to get here. We had a nice dinner and enjoyed the afternoon. After dinner, Brian's mom opened up the tent she got for them (yes, now we have two, since we got one for Rylie) and the kids had fun playing in it. Rylie climbed in and said she was going to take a nap.

But Bryce had other plans...

Sorry Rylie, find another place to nap.

Every Christmas my mom and I get matching PJs. Well this year I happened to find PJs that matched some that Rylie already had. We usually take these pictures on Christmas Eve, but well, that photo session had to be postponed until Christmas night. So here we are in our 2010 matching PJs...

I didn't get many pictures of Christmas this year. There was just way too much going on. Brian did get some video, and hopefully one day I can get some of that posted. In my spare time, you know. :-)

Rylie finally opened the rest of her presents yesterday. She has had to take Benadryl for the last three days, so her energy level sure isn't what it normally is. My house looks like a bomb went off in it, but we sure did have fun.

I hope you all had a great Christmas, and I can't wait to get around and see all of your posts and pictures!

Sickies, Sickies, And More Sickies

I'm sure you have noticed the lack of activity around this blog. We've had a few miserable days around here. Now I'm sick! Yesterday when I woke up my throat hurt so bad I couldn't even swallow. I went to the walk-in clinic and sure enough, I have strep throat. I'm on antibiotics now, and it already feels so much better. I just hope Brian and the kids (and everyone that was here for Christmas) doesn't get it!

It amazes me how well the kids can handle being sick. They can have a crazy high fever and still want to run around like nothing is wrong. I felt like I had been hit by a bus yesterday and basically just laid around all day. We were supposed to be leaving for vacation today (Mama and I are taking the kids to Alabama), but since I couldn't even muster up the energy to get laundry done yesterday, we had to postpone our trip for another day. So now I have to get 649 loads of laundry done today and get all packed up.

I'm going to try to get some Christmas pictures posted tonight, but I just wanted to get a quick post in to whine about being sick and to say Happy Monday to all of my bloggy friends. I hope you all have a great week!

Christmas Eve In The ER

Merry Christmas! I hope everyone has had a wonderful day celebrating with friends and family. Our Christmas has been great! The kids have only opened about half of their presents, though, and really don't seem to have any desire to open the rest, so our Christmas may be lasting a few days. I'll have more on that tomorrow, or as soon as I can get the pictures uploaded.

Our Christmas didn't really start out so wonderful, though. We found out the hard way last night that Rylie is allergic to cashews. (I know, what is up with my kids and allergies this week?) We ended up spending some time in the ER last night. That is certainly not how I wanted to spend Christmas Eve!

Brian's dad and step-mom came to visit yesterday afternoon. They brought some snacks with them and we were munching on them while we were waiting for my parents to get here so we could go out to dinner. One of those snacks was cashews. Rylie ate one and while she was eating it she said it burned her tongue. I thought that was weird, but they were pretty salty, so I figured it was just the salt. Within two minutes, her face was bright red all around her lips. About five minutes after that she was standing on the couch and threw up. She was also complaining that her throat was tight. She seemed to be breathing fine and the redness wasn't getting any worse, so we gave her some Benadryl and the redness started going away. I came upstairs to consult "Dr. Internet" and she wanted to come with me. Just as I was reading about how cashew allergies kill more kids than peanut allergies, and decided to take her to the ER, she threw up everywhere! She couldn't stop. So Brian took her to get her cleaned up, and I went and changed out of my puke covered clothes so I could take her to the ER.

By the time Rylie was cleaned up, she said she felt better, so I decided to call her pediatrician. I left a message with their answering service and waited for them to call back. It took a while to get a call back since my stupid phone shut off and I didn't know it, so by the time I ended up talking to the nurse, Rylie seemed fine. She had eaten some pears and applesauce and was acting normally. The nurse asked a bunch of questions, and then said that I still needed to take Rylie to the ER because she had a reaction to a high risk food. My parents had arrived right in the middle of all of this, so Mama, Rylie and I headed off to the ER.

We got to the ER at around 9, and didn't wait long before we were taken to a room. I think it was around 10 by the time the doctor came in. They had taken her vitals when we got there and everything was fine, so I guess he didn't really need to examine her. He just asked me a bunch of questions and diagnosed her with a "tree nut allergy" until we could follow up further with an allergist to see if it was just cashews. He said that her reaction was actually pretty serious.

She was given a steroid and Benadryl at the hospital, and we were given prescriptions for an epi pen, steroids and Zantac, along with instructions to continue the Benadryl for 3 days. (Apparently Zantac has some anti-histamine properties to it, and controls the excess stomach acids that appear with these kinds of reactions.)

We finally left the hospital around 11, with a very tired little girl. And to make matters worse, right when the doctor came in, she had to go to the bathroom so my mom took her. Well apparently she had to go pretty bad and it came out with such force that it went over the toilet bowl rim. It got on her pants and I didn't have any spare clothes with me. So we walked out with her wrapped up in my jacket.

By the time we got home and I got her in bed, it was well after midnight when I headed off to CVS to get her prescriptions. The pharmacist first told me 20 minutes, so I waited because I wanted that epi pen at home. After about 25 minutes he let me know that my insurance carrier's systems were down, and it should be back up by 1. So I waited some more. By the time I got to bed this morning it was almost 2. Luckily Brian's dad and step-mom had graciously offered to wrap all of the kids' gifts while Brian set up the big stuff, because there was no way I would have been able to do that at 2 this morning. (Thanks Barry and Robin!)

So needless to say, I'm exhausted. I'm also worried. I'm a worrier by nature, and I am already so stressed that I have to deal with this. I am so glad Rylie is OK, but the doctor said that each exposure could potentially worsen. For now she is not allowed to have ANY nuts, except peanuts, and that is only because she has been eating peanut butter regularly for two years now, and because they aren't in the same family as cashews. So I have to read labels very closely. I know how I am, and this is going to suck. I'm going to be so paranoid about everything she eats now, and I will probably watch her like a hawk after every meal. Ugh. But I don't EVER want to have to deal with that again, so I have to be vigilant. Hopefully we can get in with an allergist soon (the hospital doc said there are only 3 in this city that see kids) and find out for sure exactly what she is allergic to. It could just be cashews, but it could be all tree nuts.

I would love to hear from any of you that have kids that suffer from dangerous allergies like this. Please share your stories and let me know how you deal with this. I know this is going to be tough, but I will do whatever it takes to keep my baby safe.

Christmas Greetings

~*~MERRY CHRISTMAS!~*~

Merry Christmas to all of my family and friends! I hope each and every one of you have a wonderful Christmas!

Merry Christmas Eve!

Christmas is almost here! Is everyone ready? I'm not, but what else is new? This is how I always spend my Christmas Eve...grocery shopping, cleaning up my house and wrapping presents. It wouldn't be Christmas around here if I wasn't up until all hours of the night! :-)

Five Question Friday is on hiatus this week, so no enlightening facts about me today. I'm sure you all are so bummed. So instead I'll just give you a quick update on Bryce - he woke up yesterday covered in hives again. We gave him some Benadryl and they went away. I took the Benadryl to school so they could give it to him if needed, and they didn't have to use it. Last night, however, was a different story. He woke up crying so I got him out of bed and sat with him for a while. I noticed the hives coming back as we were sitting there, so I gave him some more Benadryl. I really hate giving him that stuff! I wish those things would just go away for good!

I hope everyone has a great day today, getting ready for their big Christmas celebrations tomorrow. My parents and brother will be here this afternoon, and Brian's mom, step-dad and aunt will be joining us tomorrow. I can't wait for Christmas morning to be here, so I can watch the excitement on the kids' faces when they open their gifts. So fun!

I'll leave you with a picture of my tree. This picture was actually from last year, but it looks exactly the same this year...only with toy shelves behind it.

I really love our tree! Yes, it is fake, but being that I can't stand the smell of pine, a real tree just isn't feasible in our house. And then there is the constant clean up of pine needles, and the whole trying to keep the kids, dogs and cats out of the water too. I don't think real trees do all that well in Florida anyway.

Happy Friday!
