My Little Devil

We thought that Bryce was going to be our "good" kid. I've posted several times about how independent and strong-willed Rylie is, and she has been that way since she was a baby. So we just knew that Bryce would be the mellow one. That he would just sit back and chill. Ha! Yeah right! It has become apparent over the last few months that Bryce's will is just as strong as his sister's. When he wants something, he lets you know. He gets into everything, climbs on everything, and some days, is nothing but trouble. There have been several occasions when I have caught him doing something naughty (like trying to eat the dog food, opening up cabinets and pulling everything out, or rolling over and trying to crawl away when I'm changing his diaper) and I have said "well you little devil!" When we were out trying to pick out a Halloween costume for him the first one that caught my eye was this cute little devil costume. I didn't even look at any others. It just fit. So without further ado, here's my little devil...

My Little Devil

Isn't that the cutest devil you have ever seen?

Saturday Playdate - Family Friendly Frugality

Happy (almost) Halloween! Welcome to another fun Saturday Playdate! Today we're playing with Heather from Family Friendly Frugality. I met Heather on Twitter a few months ago, shortly after she started blogging. We have chatted since then and I am so happy to say that I made another "bloggy friend"! Heather has two adorable little ones named Noah and Lizzie. They are a little older than Rylie and Bryce, but the difference in age is about the same.

Heather's motto is "Save where you can, so you can spend where you want!" I really need to take some lessons from her and heed that advice. Saving is something I need to learn how to do better. Heather is learning how to make the most of a dollar, and her blog is full of tips on how to do that. She makes it fun to save money!

When you're done here, go check out Heather's blog. Even if you are already good at saving money, you will love the freebies and discounts she posts about that will help you save even more. Leave her a comment and let her know you stopped by from the playdate. Enjoy!

First off, thanks so much LeeAnn for this awesome play date! You make a mean cupcake and punch!

I was so excited when LeeAnn asked me a couple of months ago to have a Saturday playdate with her! I remember, I’d only been blogging for a few weeks and I actually begged on Twitter for somebody to let me guest post on their blog. LeeAnn was so kind and direct messaged me saying that she was packed, but I could do a Saturday Playdate with her at the end of October! I was so ecstatic! Little did I know how much my life would change in that short period of time.

You are reading this on Saturday, but I am writing this on Thursday and tomorrow (Friday) is my last day of work! I’ve worked since my son was 5 ½ months old at a local Mother’s Day Out. It started because I wanted my son to have social interaction, but we couldn’t afford to put him anywhere unless I worked there as well. So I did. For almost 3 ½ years! So why am I leaving now? Well I’ll tell you.

First though, let me tell you a bit about me and my family! I was originally born in NY and lived in NJ until I was 13 years old. My mom passed away so my dad moved us all to Texas. Let me tell you, total culture shock! My dad was married to a woman with 4 kids of her own and they had a child together. So I went from a family with 3 children to a family with 8! It was an adjustment for sure. I had a tough time growing up, but when I met my husband…seriously my whole world changed. I went from someone that cried all the time, to someone that some days can’t wipe a smile off her face. I found my prince charming and I had two babies with him!

Noah is 3 ½ and Lizzie (Elizabeth) is 21 months and they are the most amazing children I’ve ever known. Fantastic individually and as siblings, I am a very blessed mama.

We have had our struggles though. See, we were NOT good with money. In fact, we were pretty darn bad. When my son was only a few months old our electricity got cut off for a few hours due to us being VERY late on our bill. Luckily, nothing like that ever happened again…but it took a long time for us to figure this money thing out. That’s why I started Family Friendly Frugality. I know what it’s like to learn the hard way. I’m still learning! I’m a helper by nature, so if my struggles and my mistakes can help anyone learn…they were worthwhile.

So like I said (several paragraphs back…I’m a rambler!), tomorrow is my last day of Mother’s Day Out. It’s bittersweet. I love my co-workers, I love the work, I love knowing I can check on my kids at any time during the day and I LOVE the babies I care for! It is time though. It’s time for ME to finally have a Mother’s Day Out. It’s also time for me to pursue something I never even knew I wanted. You see my goal is between my blog and some freelance pursuits I have up my sleeve…by the time my kids are full time in school, I will be a work from home mom making a full income. I can drive the car pool and be the room mom and go bring them McDonald’s for lunch!

So I sit here, sad to leave a life I’ve known since my boy was an itty bitty baby, but so incredibly excited for the next chapter of my life. By the time you are reading this, the last day is over…the goodbyes have been said and the tears have been shed. Come Monday morning, I’ll drop my kids off and head off to the coffee shop and I’ll go work. The whole time knowing that I am doing it for them…my babies. So I can be there not just these first few years of life, but every year after that. It’s a leap of faith, and I’m praying it’s all I dream it can be!

Thanks for stopping by for our playdate! I hope you had fun! If you would like to come over for a playdate, let me know in a comment or an email. I am scheduling for December, but I also need someone to come over for a playdate during Thanksgiving weekend. You can talk about Christmas shopping...one of my favorite things to do! (Obviously you can talk about anything. I was just throwing the idea out there.)

Cupcake Cuties {Review & Giveaway}

Take your cupcakes from ordinary to extraordinary with Cupcake Cuties!

I love cupcakes! Who doesn't, right? They're easy to make, and easy to eat. But sometimes they can be, well, boring. Sure, they taste great, but I have never been able to make my cupcakes really awesome looking. Until now, that is.

I recently heard about Cupcake Cuties. These are awesome cupcake decorating kits! You can turn a plain cupcake into something like this...

Those are just three of my favorites. There are over 30 kits to choose from! Cupcake Cuties has a wide range of whimsical and upscale designs for many occasions including birthdays, weddings, and holidays.

The kits are easy to use, and come with easy to follow instructions and a picture. You start with a frosted cupcake, wrap with a Cupcake Cutie sleeve, and garnish with Cupcake Cutie toppings. It's as easy as 1-2-3. Everything you need to decorate your cupcakes is included. The sleeves, which are made in the USA, are made with food safe inks.

I received the Christmas Tree kit to review. When I took the adorable package out of the box, I didn't think there was any way I was going to be able to make cupcakes that looked that pretty.

The box itself was so cute, Rylie saw it and wanted to help! After a little mishap with a litte bit of the cupcake mix ending up on the floor (what do you expect when you have a toddler "helping" you?) we managed to get the rest of the mix and all of the ingredients in the bowl and she helped me stir it up.

We baked the cupcakes according to the package directions, and left them to cool. Once they were cooled, it was time for the fun to begin.

The directions on the box said to start with a frosted cupcake, but I have been known not to follow directions from time to time. I thought it would be easier to wrap the sleeve around the cupcake without the frosting on it, so I did that first. I think I made a good call because when one sleeve ended up coming off, it was a lot harder to put it on with the frosting on it. The sleeves have an adhesive strip that keep the ends together.

Once the sleeves were wrapped around the cupcakes, I scooped the frosting into the pastry bag that was included with the kit and frosted the cupcakes. Then I took the candy cane confetti and sprinkled it over the frosted cupcakes. Look how cute they turned out!

They were so pretty, I didn't even want to eat them! Of course that didn't last too long, though, because who can have cupcakes just sitting around and not eat them? Certainly not anyone in this family. The candy canes were peppermint flavored, so it added just a little taste of peppermint to the chocolate cupcakes. YUM!

Cupcake Cuties range in price from $19.99 to $23.99. This is just a fraction of what you would pay for "designer cupcakes". Each Cupcake Cutie Kit comes with 24 self adhesive sleeves, and all the necessary toppings to create the design that is pictured.

Cupcake Cuties also offers a Cupcake Cutie of the month club membership. When you join the Cutie of the Month Club, you will receive a different Cupcake Cutie package each month preparing you for the upcoming holidays. Each kit will be shipped the on the 10th of the month, one month prior to the designated holiday. So you'll have your Santa cupcake delivered in November and your New Years cupcake in December! The price for this membership is $21.99 per month.

~*~Cupcake Cuties is going to give one of my readers a Cupcake Cuties kit of their choice!~*~

Five Question Friday - October 29th

TGIF! It has been another busy week, as usual. It was a good one, though. The Halloween festivities start today for the kids and we have all kinds of fun planned for the weekend! Rylie's class is having a pajama party at school today, complete with a parade and trick or treating. On Saturday we are heading over to Tiffany's for what is going to be an awesome Halloween party. And then Sunday we are going trick or treating at one of the local malls. Whew. Yeah, and I have to try to get some laundry and other chores done in between all of that. Good luck, right?

I hope everyone has a fabulous Friday! I'll be working today. Booooooo!

Now for some Friday blogging fun! If you would like to play along with 5QF, head over to My Little Life and link up!

1. If you could be a fly on any wall, which would you choose?

Oh I could think of a few instances when I would have loved to be a fly on the wall, but certainly not for an extended period of time. I think sometimes we're better off not knowing what people say behind closed doors. And that's all I'll say about that. :-P

2. Do you budget your Christmas shopping or just get it done without budgeting?

Budget? What is that? This is really sad, but I have never done well with budgets. Go figure, too, since I'm an accountant. If I did try to make a budget, the variance analysis on that would be scary!

3. What is the craziest fad diet you have ever done?

I don't think I have ever done a fad diet. I did the no carb thing before my wedding, if that counts. I didn't follow any certain diet, though. I just didn't eat carbs. I didn't eat much, actually. I was miserable and I will never do that again. However, I met my goal and I was skinny on my wedding day. It was worth it!

4. Is there a TV show that you have seen every episode/season of?

There are a bunch. Most shows that I watch I watch every episode of. I rarely get sick of something and stop watching. Well, except for Lost. Because I was, well, lost.

I honestly watch way too much TV to try to list them all for you. But a few of my favorites that I have watched from the beginning are Grey's, Private Practice, and Criminal Minds.

5. What one song always pulls at your heart?

I'm walking down wedding memory lane tonight for sure. These two songs always pull at my heart. Both of which were played at my wedding...one for our first dance, and one when I danced with my dad.

Don't forget to stop back by after 10PM EST tonight for my Weekend Win It giveaway linky, where you will find some great giveaways to enter, and you can also promote yours! Come on over on Saturday for Saturday Playdate and meet a fabulous guest blogger. Then come back on Sunday for Relax & Surf Sunday, where you can link up your blog and hop around on your own terms, with no rules!

Have a great weekend everyone! Happy Halloween!

My Kids And Their Ears

Rylie and Bryce both had follow up appointments at the ENT on Monday. Rylie got a thumbs up after a little bit of what can only be described as torture, but Bryce wasn’t so lucky.

The doc checked Rylie’s ears first. He could tell that her tubes were out, but her ears were filled with wax so he said he wanted to clean them out after he dealt with Bryce. (I’ll come back to Bryce in a minute.) Well Rylie didn’t hear him say that and she thought she was done. You can imagine how upset she got when he asked her to come lay up on the table. Poor kid. She got so scared. You see, my kids have both had so many problems with their ears. Add to that the fact that they are both “waxy kids” who have had to get their ears cleaned out several times, and trust me, that is NO FUN.

So we get Rylie on the table, and even though she was crying hysterically, she was being still. I have no idea why there were three nurses holding her down. I was holding her hands and I think one nurse would have been just fine, but whatever. He looked through a microscope and pulled these HUGE chunks of wax out of her ears. Seriously, I don’t know how the kid could even hear. I guess the tubes had fallen out and were just sitting there collecting wax. Anyway, her ears look great according to the doctor. She goes back in four months for a hearing test and as long as that comes back good, she will be released from his care. Yay!

The news about Bryce isn’t so great. His ears started draining over the weekend, so I knew he had yet another ear infection. Unlike Rylie, the tubes aren’t helping him. Well, I guess they are at least allowing the crap to drain so it isn’t all sitting in his ear drum making him miserable. The doctor has no idea why he keeps getting infections. He still thinks that he has some resistant bug, even though every single culture he has done has showed otherwise. So he cultured his ears again and we started the usual regimen of drops for 10 days. He said that if the culture comes back negative and he gets one more ear infection, he will recommend taking out his adenoids. Apparently the adenoids just sit back there and collect bacteria and he thinks that taking them out will stop the ear infections. He said that he sees kids that tubes don’t work for them and once he removes the adenoids the ear infections stop. He also said that he has seen a few that even that doesn’t work, and those kids usually have immune problems. Surprisingly I’m not really worried about that at this point because other than the ear crap, Bryce is healthy.

So now we wait. I should have the results from the culture back tomorrow, and I’m sure they will be negative just like all the other ones have been. Hopefully this infection will clear up and not come back, but we go back in a month regardless. I hate the thought of Bryce having to have surgery again, but I have heard that once kids get their adenoids out, they never get sick again. That would be wonderful!

Lawry's Seasoning Mixes {Review & Giveaway}

I'm a working mom. Which means weekday evenings around our house are pretty rushed. We don't have a lot of time for meal preparation, and because of this, we pretty much eat the same quick-fix meals every week.

I recently received a Lawry's "Complete Meal Ideas" gift pack. This gift pack included four new varities of seasoning mixes, plus a large marinating dish with a lid.

This is definitely a great product for us! We need to change up our dinners around here and these seasoning mixes will allow us to do that. They all sounded so good, and so easy to prepare. Each package is an exciting meal idea that quickly turns ordinary chicken, beef or pasta into a delicious meal the entire family will love.

The new varieties include:
  • Asian Style Beef & Broccoli – This easy to prepare stir fry meal will remind your family of their favorite Asian restaurant. The dish combines beef, broccoli and seasonings with a hint of garlic. Serve it over rice for a complete, satisfying meal.
  • Chimichurri Burrito Casserole – Lawry’s gives the Burrito casserole a new twist with this traditional Latin American sauce. With a few simple fresh ingredients, mealtime just got a lot more exciting.
  • Mediterranean Sundried Tomato & Garlic Chicken – Add a taste of the Mediterranean to your family’s casserole. This easy to bake casserole combines chicken, pasta, tomatoes and Feta cheese for a flavorful meal any night of the week.
  • Tuscan Style Chicken Marsala with Garlic & Basil – This effortless version of a restaurant favorite comes together on your stovetop with just a few fresh ingredients. Flavorful garlic and basil gives this meal its own Tuscan flair, perfect for serving over pasta or rice.

We decided to try the Chimuchurri Burrito Casserole. As I have mentioned before, Brian makes most dinners during the week, and I pick the kids up from school. Dinner is usually ready when we get home. This dinner was no exception. It was easy for him to prepare. He browned the ground beef and then assembled the casserole according to the package directions, which took him about 20 minutes. Once it was assembled, it had to bake for 15 minutes. When the kids and I got home, dinner was ready.

I was worried that the kids wouldn't eat this, because I thought it may have been spicy. Boy was I wrong! Bryce gobbled a whole burrito up before I was really able to even start eating. And Rylie, who is normally super picky, really liked it too! Brian and I thought it tasted great, and we will definitely be making this again soon! I'm also looking forward to trying the other seasoning mixes I received.
