The Kid Can't Catch A Break

My poor Bryce. If it's not one thing with him, it's another. Now he has hives!

On Tuesday we went to the kids' Christmas party at school. Which, by the way, was awesome! They had face painting, balloon animals, Santa, and even presents! Have I mentioned lately that I love our new daycare? Anyway...after the party we had to run some errands and headed off to Target. Bryce fussed most of the way there. I figured it was because his DVD player was broken and we hadn't put the new one in yet, so he was bored. When we got to Target and I got him out of the car, he had welts all over the side of his face! My first thought was that it was a bug bite, so we just kept watching it to make sure it didn't get any worse. Within about 20 minutes it was pretty much gone, and we didn't think much more about it.

Well today when he woke up, this is what his face looked like...

You'll have to excuse the crappy cell phone picture, but when I took it, I wasn't even thinking about blogging, I was just snapping a picture to show the pediatrician in the event they went away again. They were also on his belly. Sure enough, by the time we were ready to leave the house, they were gone. So I took him to school and asked his teachers to please keep an eye on him, and then left a message for the pediatrician.

The nurse called back and said there was no need to worry. She said that hives in toddlers are relatively common. We just needed to keep an eye on him and make sure he was not having any breathing problems. She told me to give him Benadryl and that he would be fine. She said the hives could come and go for days before they go away. We talked about anything new that he may have been exposed to, but there wasn't anything. The only thing I could think of was that they were playing with balloons and Rylie was hitting him on the head with one, but he has touched balloons before, so who knows? We may never know what caused it.

I got a call from daycare around 3 this afternoon saying that his face and back were covered with hives again, so Brian picked him up to bring him home and give him some Benadryl. Of course by the time he got there, the hives were gone again. He gave him the Benadryl anyway. Bryce didn't mind coming home early, though. He got to watch a little TV while Daddy cooked dinner, and got to do a little dancing...

I love it! I have watched that video several times, and I crack up laughing every time. I love how he is imitating the dances they are doing.

So now we wait to see if he breaks out again. We will probably wake him up in a little bit and give him another dose of Benadryl just so I don't have to worry about him having another reaction while he is sleeping. I am ready for these weird toddler illnesses to be over!

Did he have his face painted? Most face paints are latex based and can cause allergic reactions. :(

Even though the doctors alway say hives are no big deal, I hate them! They look horrible and scary and it always feels wrong to give my little guy Benedryl! I hope Bryce feels better soon!!!

Also, that video is adorable! I'm so impressed if he was copying those moves - they looked kind of tricky!

So sad! I hate all the illnesses they can get as well. I remember this happening to my now 7 year old when she was young. We never found out what caused them either!

poor guy - he's reacting to something. Took years to discover my daughter is allergic to the mercury perservative found in wide range of products. She always picked at a scab and was slow to heal, so I always used Neosporin which unfortunately has the perservative in it. Also detergent and dryer sheets: She went to bed in freshly dried sheets and woke up with hives everywhere that wasn't covered by pjs. There have been times she broke out with hives on face and neck which we think came from her hands. We put our hands everywhere and then eventually touch our faces which are way more sensitive. Once the face starts to itch, the hands go right back there to make things worse. Surfaces have to be wiped down and disinfected regularly in daycares and maybe Bryce has sensitized to whatever they are using. Good luck figuring this out. Even if they go away quickly, your little cutie has far better things to do than be breaking out in hives.
