Have you every wanted to do a craft project with your little one, but dreaded it because of the mess? Well let me introduce you to Tickly Octopus. This is a great project that is fun for you child, and doesn't make a mess. Tickly Octopus is a do it yourself Organic T-shirt design kit that includes handmade peel and stick appliqués of animals and shapes. It is a fun project for children and a perfect activity for play dates, kids’ parties, rainy days, or stay-at-home Moms and Dads with toddlers.
Tickly Octopus was founded by Glendy Tseng. Glendy Tseng is an interior architect in San Francisco bay area. Besides Design, Glendy loves spending time in the kitchen making up new recipes to try out on her friends. Tickly Octopus was inspired by an afternoon playdate with her friend's kids in the summer of 2006 and became available in early 2010.
We received a Tickly Octopus kit to review. Included in our kit was a 100% Organic cotton shirt, two bags of appliqués and the instruction card. One of the bags had the letters of Rylie's name in it, and the other had a pig and some other adornments such as grass, a flower and a heart. The shirt had the words "IS A YEAR OF THE..." on it, to show that Rylie was born in the year of the pig. Too cute!
We first looked at the instruction card to make sure we knew what to do. It looked super easy.
It really was that easy! First, we laid out all of the appliqués on the shirt so we knew where we would want them to go. I helped Rylie lay out her name, but she did the pig and all of the adornments at the bottom herself. She had a good time and then cheered when she was done!
Once we had everything laid out where Rylie wanted it, Brian helped her peel the backing off of the appliqués. It came off pretty easily, and she decided she could do that by herself.
A few minutes later, all of the appliqués were in place and we were ready for the next step!
I took the back of the spoon and pressed all of the appliqués down firmly, and then put the shirt in the dryer for 15 minutes. And that was it! Now Rylie has her super cute shirt that she made {mostly} by herself!
The shirt is adorable and Rylie loves it! She didn't want to take it off. The best part about it is that she made it and had fun doing so!
The shirt is a little big on Rylie, but that is my fault. She wears a 2T, but in some brands she is starting to wear a 3T. The size was either 2 or 4, and I wanted the shirt to last her for a little while, so I asked for the 4. The 2 probably would have fit her, but I would rather have it too big than too small.
This was a fun, easy project to do with Rylie. She isn't even 3 yet and was able to really participate in this, rather than me having to do most of it for her. This is definitely a cute project for all ages! I highly recommend Tickly Octopus!
There are also plain t-shirts and a lot of different animals available in the Tickly Octopus Kits. The kits start at $30 for one t-shirt, one animal and adornments. The shirt sizes range from 2T to 8. You can purchase the kits directly from the Tickly Octopus website. These kits would make great Christmas gifts for the little ones in your lives! And don't forget about parties, playdates and rainy days.
