A Recall That Makes Sense

The other day I was complaining about ridiculous recalls. Well the latest one I saw come across my inbox isn't ridiculous. Unfortunately, though, it is a product I love, so I'm pretty bummed about it.

Hyland's Teething Tablets were recalled over the weekend. I'm so sad about this. We used them for Rylie and we have been using them recently for Bryce. We call them "Magic Beans" in our house, because they work like magic! They really do work wonders on a teething baby.

Here is an excerpt from the FDA's Questions and Answers about this recall:

FDA is issuing this warning because the use of Hyland’s Teething Tablets may pose a risk to children. FDA analysis and testing identified some Hyland’s Teething Tablets that contained varying amounts of belladonna, a potentially toxic ingredient. FDA has received reports of serious adverse events in children taking this product that are consistent with belladonna toxicity. An ongoing FDA inspection at the manufacturer indicates substandard control of the manufacturing operation.

FDA has also received reports of children who consumed more tablets than recommended, because the containers do not have child resistant caps.

Sure, I have to wonder if the problem occurs when children take more than directed, but I would rather be safe than sorry. Our bottle of Hyland's is now in the garbage. Like I said, I'm really bummed about this. Now what is going to help my little buddy on those miserable nights when he can't get any relief?

This recall bugs me because it says right on it that they haven't been tested for safety and then of course there is the whole thing about children taking more than they should. Oh, and there is the line about "no conclusive link between the reactions and this product" line that also appears in the recall wording. Me thinks that a few people freaked out when they saw belladonna was one of the ingredients (always has been) and are demanding for stricter regulation and such.

Perfect timing with Mason's first teeth *sigh*

I'm not sure what brand I use to use but I remember using them with the boys. I agree better safe then sorry. I threw out the Tylenol we had when they had that huge recall. In fact I have a coupon for another bottle but our stores STILL aren't stocking any.

I used Humphrey's Teething pellets for all 3 of my boys & they are awesome!! They also have teething relief strips. You can check them out at www.the naturalstore.com (I noticed that the website still has the Hyland tablets for sale....not sure if they're aware of the recall).

What a bummer. We used these sporadically when my girls were little, but I found that motrin worked better than anything else. I didn't use it a lot, just for the worst times. I'm so glad that most of our teething is behind us!
