Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This

Do you ever have one of those days where you think "geez, what's next?" Well that was my morning yesterday. I should have realized after Rylie threw a temper tantrum as soon as she got up, that was a sign as to how my day was going to go.

It started off with the temper tantrum. Rylie has been a little defiant lately. Between the constant "No!" and the other backtalk, she is really testing our limits. It is typical toddler stuff, but I'm done putting up with it. I need to reel her little butt in before she gets out of control. I do NOT want my kid to be a brat. She had a bad dream and ended up in our bed early Saturday morning. When we woke up for the day, I went in to go to the bathroom and she took off out into the other room and came back with this box set of DVDs. She ended up putting them on the floor in the family room and when I asked her to put them back where she got them from she said no and walked away. I gave her another chance and when she didn't take it I sat her on the couch for "time out" for two minutes. Well time out doesn't really work too well if she won't sit there, so I put her in her room and held the door closed. She screamed for the entire two minutes and then when I opened the door she still wouldn't pick the DVDs up, so she got to stay in there for another two minutes. I guess after that round she decided she didn't like that so she went and got the DVDs and put them away. I realize that I could have picked the DVDs up for her, and it really wasn't that bad of an offense, but she has to learn to do what we say.

Shortly after Bryce got up Brian says "hey, did you notice his ear?" Um, no, why? When I looked at it, I realized why he had me up until 2AM the other night...he has another ear infection! HE HAS TUBES! Why does this keep happening? This is probably his 4th ear infection since the tubes were put in. We cleaned his ear up and started antibiotic drops. The kids have a follow up at the ENT Monday, so he'll get checked out then.

A little while later, Bryce pooped. No big deal. I went in to change his diaper and as I was wiping him, he grunted, and it was like someone turned on a soft serve ice cream machine. Only it wasn't ice cream...it was poop...all over my hand! Luckily I had a wipe in my hand and was able to catch it all, but still, ewwwwww. I'm honestly surprised I didn't barf right there. I don't do well with poop.

I was standing at the sink washing my hands and telling Brian how I was really surprised the poop incident didn't make me vomit. I looked over and Bryce pulled a sippy cup out of the seat compartment of one of their little ride on toys and started bringing it up to his mouth. Luckily I was close and was able to grab it before he drank it, because it was a sippy full of milk! Curdled milk, that is. I have no clue how long that had been in there, but when I poured it out, there were chunks. And remember how the poop didn't make me barf, well the smell of that milk almost did. I dropped the cup and ran over to the garbage can. Luckily I hadn't had breakfast yet.

It wasn't five minutes later that Rylie came out of the dining room drinking out of a sippy cup. When I asked her what she was drinking she said "Bryce's juice". Um, Bryce didn't have juice! So I grabbed the cup from her and it was orange juice from who knows when. I am pretty sure it was from Friday morning, but still, it had been sitting out for over a day. So of course I freaked out and just knew she was going to get sick. She didn't, though, thank goodness. But what the heck? Why do we have random sippy cups "hidden" all over the house? Needless to say, we now have a new rule...no sippy cups anywhere but the kitchen! Geez.

Once everyone took naps, I think the dark cloud over our house went away. We ended up having a great afternoon at a fall festival with some good friends, and had a fun evening at home. There weren't even any tears at bath time! So here I sit at 7AM trying to do a few things before it all starts again. I'm crossing my fingers for a better morning today!

Ah, the tantrums. We've had a long road through 2 and 3 with our older daughter and now that she's 4, they seem to be tapering off (knock on wood). Gotta love when kids must test every. single. limit.

I may have done okay with the spoiled milk but I'm not sure I could have made it through the pooping into my hand. BLECH!!

Motherhood is good stuff, no? :)

Aww poor Bryce. I had terrible earaches when I was younger. My Mom said I suffered from them a lot. Hope it clears up quickly.

Glad the day turned out nice. Sounds like you deserved a good day after that morning!

Oh my gosh! I hate the random old sippy cup thing. That happens here too sometimes. Gives me the heebie jeebies.

I think you did the right thing with the DVD's many times it is easier to be strong on the small stuff. Easier to work that first so hopefully by the time the big stuff rolls around they know the rules.

I remember one time Christopher at the age of 2 threw his fork. I told him to pick it up and he refused so I put him in his room, with a baby gate so the door wasn't closed and he could see me but he couldn't get out. I stood at the door screaming and crying and every so often I would ask if he was going to pick it up. Finally after 20 minutes YES 20 minutes he agreed to pick it up.

Oh man, what a morning!! So, this is what life is like with two kids? I'm not sure I want to sign up for that?!?! ;o) Then again, it's crazy enough in this house with a toddler, a husband, two cats, and a dog... what's another kid really going to do? Sounds like you are having a great weekend!

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to the temper tantrums. I fear they're starting already, and my daughter still has a few months til 2. The sippy cups are not a problem at my house, because I can't do anything else until the sippy cup is back in the kitchen. I'm just crazy that way. And this week's gag moment in my house? Banana bread that looked fine, smelled fine, but tasted like... Oh, I can't even think about it without gagging!

Good luck!

I am going to tell you now, it doesn't get easier with the backtalk. They really try to test your patience and see how far you will let them go by the age of 4...so be prepared. I guess we all just have to deal with it the best we can....maybe a glass of wine would be helpful! So sorry for little Bryce....keep us posted on his doctor's visit. At least things cleared up and you enjoyed the day :)

OMG - the poop thing made me LOL. I've done that before. I've also coaxed the poop out when Little was constipated. I'd sit there holding her knees to her chest and telling her to push. It worked, but was really gross.

I've found similar sippy cups. I swear I wish I could microchip them so I know where they are hiding.

Good for you for standing your ground regarding the DVD's. She'll get it, she just has to know that you mean business. I often tell Camdyn, that's fine if you don't want to pick up your toys, but I'm not going to get you milk, or a snack until you follow my directions. By the time she is hungry the toys are where they should be.

Bahahaha! All I can say is I'm glad I'm not the only one!!!! If I had a nickel for every time I had to sniff out nasty lost milk sippies... well I'd have a lot of nickels. So gross!!
