I receive recall notices from the CPSC through an email list I subscribe to. Every now and then I get one for a product we own. The latest one I received is for our Graco Metrolite stroller.
Here is an excerpt from the recall notice:
Entrapment and strangulation can occur, especially to infants younger than 12 months of age, when a child is not harnessed. An infant can pass through the opening between the stroller tray and seat bottom, but his/her head and neck can become entrapped by the tray. Infants who become entrapped at the neck are at risk of strangulation.
Does anyone else find this ridiculous? First of all, who leaves a baby in a stroller unattended? Especially when they aren’t harnessed? Not only could they slip out, if they are old enough, they could climb out and fall. I can see from the description in the recall how this could possibly happen, but if you are a responsible parent it won’t happen. A child should NEVER be left unattended in a stroller. That is just common sense.
Our infant car seat was from Graco, and we own two Graco strollers, and we have never had any issues with them. This recall certainly doesn’t affect my perception of that brand.
Another ridiculous recall I remember was the Bumbo recall a few years ago. Apparently people were leaving their babies unattended in the Bumbo seat ON TOP OF A TABLE and a few fell off the tables and suffered skull fractures. Give me a break. There was obviously nothing wrong with the Bumbo seat, since the recall was just to put new warning labels on them. The problem was the apparent lack of brain cells these parents had.
I also see recalls all the time for blinds and hooded jackets with draw strings. I mean ALL THE TIME. Why bother making these products anymore when they will just get recalled? I’m surprised that sneakers are still made with laces.
I realize that freak accidents happen all the time, and it can happen to the best of us. Remember when I let Bryce’s car seat fall off the bench? Well that certainly wasn’t Graco’s fault. It was my fault for momentarily losing my mind and setting the seat on the bench in the first place. At least he was strapped in and the car seat protected him. Yes, I was careless and stupid. Should I complain to the CPSC about the car seat? Absolutely not.

I totally agree with you. Its just as bad as hot coffee cups announcing warning contents may be hot.
Well I would hope so, I did order hot coffee.
I 110% agree with you. It's ridiculous how litigious our society has become.
The only one that I remember thinking...yeah this should be recalled...were the infantino slings. Those simply had too much padding on them to be safe (and I totally support baby wearing...wore both my babies!).
The bumbo one just makes me roll my eyes.
Agreed. People are so quick to blame someone else for their own lack of common sense!
Both recalls are ridiculous! Accidents happen. And I know, my daughter slid out the bottom of her Graco stroller just before her first birthday.
We had laid her stroller flat to change her because there wasn't any other place available at the moment. We got her changed, put the tray table in place so she wouldn't fall out (HA!) and put her stroller in the upright position so we could strap her in and go. She freaked over the movement, slid out the bottom and landed sitting up on the floor between my husband and I.
Accidents happen. Learn from them, and move on. Don't cause a ruckus with the manufacturer.

Agreed, agreed, agreed. I have the MetroLite and I am not worried about the recall. Why? BECAUSE I BUCKLE MY KID INTO THE SEAT. And I pay attention so my kid wouldn't be stuck long enough to suffocate.
I agree with you. Unfortunately, with all the lawsuits, they have to be extremely careful. It's a shame that people aren't expected to have common sense anymore!
Stopping by from Mama's Little Nestwork. Your kiddos are adorable!
OMG ITA!!! With ALL of this!
We had a "touch-and-feel" baby book with a plastic bubble in it full of little beads that would rattle. The plastic bubble was about a quarter of an inch thick, it looked virtually indestructible to me. Yet we received a recall notice that somewhere someone had managed to break open the plastic and the little beads could be choked on.
You'd have had to back over the book with a truck to break open that bubble. It was one of our favorite baby books, no way was I throwing it away. We just kept it out from under any of our cars.
I swear that some people just don't have common sense. When I read some of the stories that you mentioned, it blows my mind that parents do some things. Like leave your kid in the strolller unattended. If there is a real manufacturers defect, I am all of the recall. Stupidity, not so much :)
It is posts like this that continue to remind me why I am so happy I found your blog.
Soooo true. A company should not need to recall perfectly good products when it is due to the parent neglect. Who doesn't strap their child in and then blames the company?! And that Bumbo recall was ridiculous!
Common sense folks. And we have all done something careless once or twice, it doesn't mean you report it and blame the company.
